IPod Connector

Is there supposed to be a special cable or adapter to connect between the in-console iPod port to the device?

Yes, it came with the car from the factory. Of course, if you bought it used the odds of getting the cord passed on to you are not very good. The cord fit older iPods and iPhones (up to 4s) but not the newer ones.
