Default Jaguar XF 2009 Fuel Gauge problem - RESOLVED

Hello!

I have a problem that the car is showing me a warning light that there is no fuel, even though the tank is full. Sometimes it starts working again and it's showing the right amount of fuel left in the tank.
I'm almost 100% sure that it's the connector on the "fuel sender" or "fuel gauge" somewhere that's faulty. It's just needs to be cleaned or something. Also on the Jag dealer computer it showed no faults ( of course it was working on the day I was there) and also the mechanic said it could be the connector that's disconnecting the information from fuel sensor..

It was said on other forums that the connector can be reached under the rear seats. Is there anybody who can help me locate this connector? So that when I remove rear seats, I can find this connector...

Thank you for your help,

Rok

I've had this exact problem. The issue is that the fuel tank sender that mounts inside the tank uses black plastic connectors internally to connect the fuel level sensor to the external connector on top of the fuel tank and these fail over time.

There is a TSB that covers this, basically you need to remove the fuel pump/sender from the tank, snip off the connectors and rejoin the wires with a more permanent and reliable solution. You need a special tool to remove the fuel sender unit locking ring, and mine needed considerable force to remove. I had to buy a breaker bar and then also a length of pipe to slot over the end of it to get the torque required.

I've attached relevant docs.

We had that issue come up with our 2009 XF, a couple of years ago. Dealer replaced the fuel pump, as well as the sending module. They're accessed through two plastic "pop-outs" in the floor of the car, under the bottom cushion of the rear seat.

Mine did this recently. The AA came out, their knowledge base told them that the fuel float on the left side (as you look at the car from the front) can stick.
Remedy? A swift blow to the tank just in front of the rear wheel a few times cleared it!
It's not recurred since.

Hey guys!

Thank you so much for your help. I fixed the problem. The problem was apparently in connector...had to put it off and on and now it works perfectly.

Regards,
Rok

Hello Rok,
where did you finally find the connector?

I removed the back seats, removed the plastic cover that pops off, unscrew the white plastic cover with the tool that is designed to unscrew this things, ( on both sides of course) and then you'll see a big black connector on both sides. I think that was the source of the problems, just unplug it, clean in a little and plug it back on. Then turn on the car (just not the engine) and see if it works. Wait for a minute or two because fuel level is refreshed every half a minute or so.

Hello sir. I am experiencing the same problem and want to attempt to fix myself. Tried disconnecting the fuel line on top of the petrol flange and fuel began shooting out. How do I release the fuel pressure in order to disconnect that line without fuel going everywhere?

Before attempting to open the fuel tank access port, open the gas cap, on the side of the car, in order to release any pressure that's in the tank.

Ok thank you. I took it to the dealer just to get a second opinion and they checked it out and called me back and said the sender needs replacement and the petrol flange and that would be $1400. I mentioned the TSB to them but I doubt they even looked into that and they just want to replace the the parts.

The fuel gauge level sensor in our 2009 XF, died about 2, maybe 3 years ago. The dealer replaced it, and then replaced it again, as about 2 weeks later, as the replacement malfunctioned, too. I seem to recall the cost was about $8-900, as the sending unit/fuel pump are one assembly, I believe....

Course they do. The TSB is a real ***ing pain in the *** to execute. The wires don't have much slack and it stinks of gas while you're working on it. Pretty horrible job to be fair. Far easier to just replace the part.

I guarantee you that if you remove the pump and fix the wiring as described in the TSB your fuel gauge will be fine.

Yes completely understand. I was able to get all the OEM jaguar parts the fuel pump the petrol flange and fuel tank pump seal for $490 vs them charging me $940 for the parts. I am going to attempt changing myself tomorrow as it looks like a fairly easy job. We shall see.

Nice, that seems like a reasonable deal.

From memory, the hardest part for me was removing the locking ring on the fuel pump. I not only needed the tool (available
here here
) but also a metal pole over the breaker bar to get enough torque to undo the locking ring. Maybe I was unlucky, but I can't imagine having the same success without at the very least the lock ring tool itself.

Default fuel gauge problem

Is this low fuel level problem likely to stop car running ?
