i see online the xf should have keyless entry, just having the keyfob closeby should unlock the door, but i have to press the unlock button on the keyfob to unlock the door, was that an option or is mine not working?
You just need to open the door when the key is nearby, ie, I leave mine in my handbag. I was expecting to press the button on the handle to unlock it but as it was already locked it would sound the beep beep noise. It works on any of the doors, as long as you have the key on you, simply pull the handle. To lock the car you can press the button, and it will give the two louder chirps.

Maybe this helps?

Oh- interesting ! Maybe its changeable in some menu , I've never looked, but on my car ( 2008/2009) it does not normally chirp ( silent apart from locking motor noise) but 2 chirps indicates a problem eg a door not closed properly, boot open etc OR if my key is not in my possesion when I try to lock my car.
Although I am mostly familiar with the passive lock cars, there are the 3 types that I have seen in print. Key lock, keyless and passive.
First, here are some pics of handles I pulled from archived ebay posts, one have the button and the other does not. The embossed key is on the removable cover over the emergency key hole.
As John Williams stated, not all cars have the passive option.
