Default Message Centre

Hi everyone, I have a 2010 XF base model. My message centre has quit displaying. All I can see of it is at night and it’s flashing from Red to Amber! Thus worries me not only can I not tell how much fuel I have but I have a coolant leak and it always tells me when low. Yesterday, when it started it chugged and stumbled like when it sends all the default messages.

PLEASE HELP!!! What do I need to do to remedy the message centre!?

Replacing, should be pretty straight forward.

You need to be careful with Ali...

TEh description is different than teh tilete and cars it fits says Volvo.

It looks nothing like the front screen and the back connections do not match at all (if the pictures are accurate) but then again it's Ali.... on you

Get yourself a used instrument cluster from your favourite auction site and dismantle it for the part.

    Comes apart fairly easily

You can't easily replace the unit as a whole as its one of the VIN coded modules and its a PITA to encode unless you've got the right programmers etc.

You have some choices. This is the type of scenario where people either dump these cars or are forced to become their own mechanic.

A new cluster is crazy expensive, will need dealer programming, and possibly all new keys.
A used cluster will still need to be programmed to the car, and by someone that understands the mileage correction implications and keys working afterwards.
The existing cluster could be repaired, and may not need reprogramming, but someone will have to remove it to send out and you will be driving something else until it comes back for re-installation. Typing "cluster repair usa" or "cluster repair uk" or whatever country in google shows a few results that look appropriate.

Surely if it’s just the screen (lcd) that’s goosed, you can just change that?
If it’s the same as the one in the previous picture, there’s a ribbon connector coming off it.
It looks like unplug and replace

Yes, exactly. Buy a used one and strip the screen out, its just a screen on a ribbon cable. I'll pull it off later and upload a picture.

There you go. the screen is just connected with this ribbon cable. You might even find that taking it out and cleaning the contacts might fix it if you live in an area where its very damp a lot of the time, but mostly likely is that its given up the ghost by itself.

Worst case scenario is that the screen controller is bust however you said its flashing orange and red, so what it sounds like is that its trying to give you two warnings and the back-light is switching from red to amber but the screen isn't working so you have no idea what its trying to tell you.

    Default Wow!

Thank you so much! So glad I didn’t jump at the first advice. I do live in very humid area but it’s been coming and going for a while, so I bet it’s busted.

thanks again. I’m going to check into this in morning. I will let u know outcome!!

Any advice on a key fob that car says not detected and slot tells me check fob ?

    probably one of the following:
    1. faulty/dead battery in the fob
    2. failed fob
    3. fob/car pairing has been corrupted/lost and needs reprogramming
    4. dying battery in the car
Do you have more than one fob and only one is not working?

Agreed with most of above, except....
the transponder in the fob doesn’t need a battery to be detected
try your spare fob if you have one
the transponder receiver is goosed for some reason

just the oine fob that is programmed. I recently bought a used fob from I think a 2012, but it needs programming. Jag dealer told me it is $200 for fob and $500 to program
