Default Not again....

A few months ago, my Xf was getting the "fuel level low" warning when it should not have. Took it to the dealer and three days later car was returned after replacing the fuel line. Last week I had the warning pop up, but it went away. Today, I'm getting it pretty often. Not sure what is going on with this XF Feeling frustrated right now.

I'm sure that once you take it back they'll figure it out eventually. One of the things I like about the "keep replacing things until we figure it out" method of troubleshooting is that eventually you have an entire new engine!

Sounds like the fuel tank sender is bad. I find it hard to see how a fuel line could affect the signal from the tank to the instruments. Does your fuel consumption display seem correct? This must use the fuel level sender signal and the ECU fuel flow signal to calculate fuel consumption. Something is triggering the low fuel message and surely that has to be the fuel level sender.

The fuel consumption seems correct. It happened once today and the consumption went blank and displayed ------.

There must be a fault in the fuel level sender circuit. My guess is there is a faulty fuel level sender. These sometimes fail intermittently. For the fuel consumption to recover from blank as opposed to beginning again the ECU must be getting and remembering a signal. If the signal is interrupted it shows blank because it cannot update the calculation. It uses and creates a running average. The low fuel warning will be triggered by a separate signal from the tank sender.

This would happen on occasion with my last car the 2010 XF. After a while I seemed to noticed a pattern--it only would happen right after I filled the tank--especially if I "over filled" it at all. Have driving for a bit it would return to normal operation. Do you see a similar pattern?

It is very important not to overfill modern cars as it can interfere with the fuel vapour recovery system. A check engine light soon follows.

Had the same issue on my 2010 XFR. Could not replicate the issue for the dealer, so I video taped it on my blackberry so I have proof. Funny thing is, I haven't had the issue in over 6 months. Just one of those gremlins. Glad I have the 6yr 100k warranty.
