Default oil change?

Hi guys (& gals)

I'm in the middle of changing out rotors and pads today - not too bad of a job, and I thought while I was underneath I would do an oil and filter change. This is a 2011 XF 5.0 NA. So after removing my two piece stainless steel undertray (I was not going to pay $300 for a plastic replacement so made one out of 20 ga stainless). Anyway........the car is out of warranty so this is the first time I have had to do an oil change. I went to the local O'Reilly's and what they had was a $49 filter that looked like something I would've put in my old 69 E-type. WTH, no spin on canister? This is like something from the 1960s, is there a good reason for it?

Ah, yes, my questions. Now I am out of warranty,
1) I assume any good synthetic oil such as mobil 1 will do?
2) What's the capacity?
3) And are the filters really replaceable elements?
4) Where's the filter???

The owners manual is a joke, apparently changing the oil should be left to a professional....sigh......

The 'joke' owner's manual contains complete and precise answers to your questions 1 and 2.

The oil filter housing location is quite obvious if your remove the engine cover.

There is no need to return your car to a dealer for an oil change, warranty or not.

I know a bit about the supercharged 5.0, as on my old XFR, and I changed the oil and filters on it twice. Not so sure about the NA version but I believe that the oil and filters are exactly the same.
The oil spec for the earlier 5.0 V8 is Ford WSS-M2C925-A 5W-20 full synthetic, then it changed a bit later to WSS-M2C945-A and then to 0W-20.
Either of these will be perfectly OK for your 2011 model, but if you live in a hot climate I suggest 5W-20 over 0W-20, and conversely for a cold climate 0W-20 would be better.
JLR recommend Castrol Professional Edge A1, but this is virtually unobtainable outside of a JLR dealer and they charge a fortune for it. However there are several brands which meet the required spec including Millers and Mobil 1 which will be perfectly OK.
The oil capacity is 6.25 litres.
The oil filter is on top of the motor, towards the front, just on the left hand side of the V.
It's an element inside a plastic canister, you unscrew the canister, replace the element (and sealing ring) then screw the canister back on.
Just take the engine cover off and you can't miss it.
Sometimes the canister has been screwed on by a gorilla and it can be a PITA to remove, I found that a strap type filter removal tool with a rubberised grip was the only thing that worked for me.

I just filled both on my 2011 5.0L XF Premium with the Pennzoil oil made from natural gas. So far so good.

Amazon Amazon

And yes, the oil filter cartridge looks like what you would find on an E-Type, but you won't find it on my 1965 Series 1 4.2L Roadster because I converted it to a spin on filter.

But many cars today have the cartridge filter, not just the XF.

There's no need to pay $49 for an oil filter. I just bought a Jaguar OEM one from an on-line Jaguar parts dealer for $15 ($18 shipped to me). There are apparently two different types of oil filters for the 5.0 NA as they changed at some point. Based on my VIN, it is a paper filter cartridge that goes inside a plastic canister like on German cars.

What is your source for this information -- especially as to WSS-M2C945-A replacing 925-A? Attached is a letter from JLR stating that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W20 can be used where 925-A is specified. However, I haven't seen any documentation stating that 945-A replaces 925-A.

BTW, you can also buy this from Walmart by the quart for a good price and an even better price if they have the 5-qt. jug available.

I use WalMart API and Dexos certified Supra Tech Full Synthetic (A product of Ashland oil, makers of Valvoline) 5w20 for $17.99 a 5 qt bottle. This allows me to change my oil every 3k miles for $36 in oil. For filters I usually buy 6+ at a time on Ebay, Amazon or Alibaba, the trick here is to search under both Jaguar and Range/Land Rover 5 liter engines (They are the same engine and oil filter) for the best price. My XFR is at 80k miles now with absolutely NO issues.

I was going by the info on this page (you need to scroll down a ways):
WSS-M2C945-A spec replace the WSS-M2C925-A for motor oil 5w/20

Also, I have used oil which says 945-A on the bottle in both my 2010 XFR and 2014 F-Type with no problems at all.

Thank you all for the replies.
I notice this:
ACDelco PF659 Professional Engine Oil Filter

is available on Amazon for ten bucks or so.

Hmmm, haven't been able to find any more information about this, anyone have information about which filter for which Vin series?

There is no such Jag issued information.

The info in the owner's manual is correct. No joke.

I read the whole thread, and the consumer keeps pressing the Ford mechanic about documentation indicating that 945-A supercedes or exceeds the 925-A spec, but in the end there is none.

I would believe that if there were a statement on Ford letterhead saying so.

Also, if you do a search on the Mobil Oil web site under 5W20, you will see that it states that it meets 945-A and 930-A but is silent as to 925-A. If 945-A superceded 925-A, don't you think that Mobil would know this and list that Mobil 1 meets spec 925-A as well?

I called Mobil and asked them about this and they said meeting 945-A doesn't mean meeting 925-A. I know this seems like splitting hairs but since Pennzoil Ultra Premium clearly meets 925-A and it's readily available at Walmart, I'll stick to that.

There are two different types of oil filters for an XF 5.0.

The first one is a one-piece spin-on type, part # C2C61411, and the other is a paper/plastic insert that goes into a plastic canister, part #C2D3670. The correct one for your car is determined by VIN. I ordered an oil filter from a Jaguar dealer based on year and engine type and got the wrong one initially. They then sent me the correct one based on my VIN. You can see the difference in the photos below.

Guys,

I should've taken a picture before I removed the filter housing, the new filter and o-ring are in but I am unsure if the raised ring around the upper filter housing should be flush to
the lower - I assume it should but I do not want to go any further without confirmation as there is a lot of resistance at this point. Better safe than sorry, Here's a pic of how far on my filter housing is at the moment.

I am not sure how much difference there is between the NA and the supercharged engine, but I did my oil change exactly like this in my XFR. I think the filter is the same.

It should screw down flush to the lower filter housing.

Agreed.
On both my old XFS and XFR the last couple of turns to get it all the down flush were pretty "hard", hand/finger tight doesn't cut the mustard, you need a proper oil filter removal tool to do it all the way up.

Nice video. The fact that the oil filter is up top means you can do the whole thing without raising the car and getting under it.

That is an old link. Mobil 1 met M2C925-A at one time, then Mobil stopped listing it as meeting that spec. I called and asked Mobil about this and they said that they likely changed to formulation of the oil and didn't re-test it to meet this spec.

Here is the current web page:

https://mobiloil.com/en/product-sele...LjAgKEdBUyk%3d

If you enter your year, make and model on the web site, it will reply back "Based on what you've told us, your vehicle manufacturer recommends a 5W-20 viscosity and oil that meets Ford WSS M2C925-A. We currently do not offer any motor oils in the United States that meet these specifications."

When I asked Jaguar about what oil to use in my 2011 5.0 premium, this was their response
;

Thank you for contacting the Jaguar Customer Relationship Center.

We appreciate your inquiry. Jaguar does not recommend a brand of oil for this vehicle, but rather, the specifications of: SAE 5W-20 meeting Jaguar
specification WSS M2C925-A. We would suggest checking Castrol and other brands for this specification. Additionally, your authorized Jaguar retailer may also be able to assist you. You can find the closest retailer to you at; www.jaguarusa.com.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-4-JAGUAR, option 9, or by e-mail.

Sincerely,

Carol Ann Carroll
