Default oil level

2011 XF with 5.0 non SC

I check the car's oil level regularly (everyday that I work, 5 days week).

I park the car in the same place every day. When I check the oil level after work (the car has been sitting 8 hours), some days the display shows the level all the way to the right and other days it shows 1/2. I have not added any oil. I may be paranoid, but does this indicate a problem with the sensor?

Possible the oil level is just bordering zones, you could add a little oil and see if it goes away. I've only heard of one oil level sensor failure since joining the forum. And while this sonic method of checking fluids levels is new to the automobile world, it's been around the aviationl and maritime world's for decades.

It sounds like you are checking either immediately after shutting down or after it has sat all day. The procedure calls for checking 10 minutes after shutting down. Perhaps that will give you consistent readings.

Do you know the quick way to check it , by popping the hood and hitting cancel on the cruise control then toggling?

Maybe check it this way, so you can do it at X time after shutting the engine off.

just think of all the efforts we all go through for more speed - you are lighter and faster for free!
i agree with Will that you are flirting with two different increments on the scale of oil level. i top mine off but wonder if i'm close to overfill at times. i think it could be a finer scale showing better increments than half liters..
