Default Check engine light, mass air flow

Hello all, would like to see if anyone has ever had a check engine light for mass air flow sensor. The repair shop informed me that my K&N air filter could contribute to an oily contaminated sensor that could not be cleaned with an electrical cleaner. I did replace the air filter with a paper style filter after the sensor was replaced, all is well so far. Has anyone out there ever experienced this problem by using a K&N permanent air filter? Thanks for any input.......Jack

I had a K&N in my '07 X-Type with no problems.
Maybe if the filter was over oiled it would cause a problem.

Some of the techs on here recommend to toss the K&N due to exactly this sort of problem.

The K&N filter has been discussed over and over again on this forum NO real resolve!! I have one in both of my cars and both have well over 135,000 mi and they have not caused a problem for me and others. However, if over oiled it may mess with the MAFS but before we jump the gun what are the codes you are getting? The codes and not what you were told they mean. Post the codes and we will do our best to help.

Post the codes - not descriptions. That is good advice for anyone asking for help troubleshooting Jaguars.

Generic decode lists are often very misleading with Jaguars. Sometimes they don't give all possible causes and sometimes they are just wrong.

Years ago K&N filters were delivered to customers "dry" - customers had to oil the filters. This led, in some cases, to over-oiling; and then the legend began.
K&N now delivers oil filters pre-oiled, and these pre-oiled filters do not cause any wetting of MAF, etc. However, customers do eventually clean and re-oil their K&Ns, in which case it is quite possible to over-oil.

It's a mystery to me why any uses these filters in the first place. The supposed horsepower gains have been proven over and over to be false and the economics are dubious unless the car will be kept for a decade or two- so why go looking for trouble?
