Opinions on 2011 XF purchase
Hello all,
Been reading the forum for a while now and want to thank everyone for the great information
The time has come for me to consider purchasing my first Jaguar. Please let me know what you think about the price etc.
2011 Jaguar XF Premium
Engine: 385hp / 380 lbs-ft
Features to include: Back up camera/ Heat-Cool Seats/ Navigation/ Bluetooth/ Satellite Radio/ Ipod-USB-Aux Line/ Blind Spot monitors
Color: Caviar (Ext)/ Barley-Truffle(Int)
Miles: 14,544
Price: $44,950
Warranty: 5yr/50,000miles
Maintenance: 5yr/50,000miles
Plus all the bells and whistles that go along with it. The price is what I have been quoted and I haven't even started to negotiate. I believe that they quoted $2200 additional for the extended warranty. I did have a chance to test drive it and just love the way it feels. Clean car fax 1 owner car.
Would appreciate any and all comments and suggestions on pricing

Do you know what the MSRP of the car was when new? Depreciation is about 20% in the first year and 15% per year for the next two years? You can add back something for the low mileage for a two year old car. I'd say about a third of MSRP discount. You can check KBB and check the car with the actual mileage and then with say 24k mileage (about 12k per year average) and see what the difference is. Add that back in. See how that looks. How much of the warranty is left? Find out what the in-service date is.
You should look on Edmunds.com or KBB.com to determine the value of the car. You can also search for cars in your area.
Personally, depending on how long you plan to keep the car and how well it has been maintained, skip the warranty. If you do regular maintenance and take reasonable care of the car it should give you thousands of miles of relatively trouble free service. That said, if the car is Certified Pre Owned you may have a leg up, but that will cost you more.
Also, search this forum for potential problems that members have discussed. On a personal note, that beautiful interior will require "care and feeding" to keep it clean keep that in mind.
Let us know what happens.
Good Luck

I have to say it does seem a bit high. I purchased my 2010 for about 32.00 but looked at 2011 with more miles than my 10 and just couldn't justify price. Mine was certified with existing warranty. Also a premium.
My decision came down to the darn interior. Hated the wood in the newer one.
No matter what you decide, when you get your XF, You'll never go back!!!

So I just returned from the dealer and unfortunately I didn't return with my XF. I'm kind of bummed with the way the whole situation was handled from the Jaguar dealership.
Basically they started out by taking $810 off the price of the car and made it like they were giving me the best deal in the world. To add insult to injury the totally undervalued the value of my trade in. They only wanted to give me $11,000 for my Camry when another dealership from the same owner wanted to give me $14,500 when I was looking at the BMW M6. Same owner big difference on trade in value.
When we did negotiate we came up with a fair trade in value of $12,950 and $41,000 for the car. Then he had to bring it to his manager. When he came back with his "new numbers" he came back with $44,000 for the car and a trade in of $12,950. So he came up $1950 on the trade in but jacked the price up by $3000. At this point they were just playing with the numbers and insulting my intelligence as they were not very consistent in their reasoning. At the end of the day it would of been $2090 off the original price of $44950 but with a weak value of the trade in it only turned into a $540 savings off the original price if they valued my trade in as their sister dealership did. And on top of that they wanted $2250 for the extended warranty.
Needless to say I am bummed (actually pissed) and unfortunately they are the only dealer in the area. If I do ever go back I will definitely not work with the original salesman. He basically told me he didn't believe me when I told him the KBB.com value. As I was leaving I did pull it up on my phone and show him the KBB value of $41,238 and mentioned to him that I wasn't lying.

WOW! Didn't even think about that situation.
You would think the dealership would realize with the internet, we have more information at our fingertips to be better informed as to the value of our cars and theirs!
I, personally, wouldn't give in so quickly, I'd actually call the owner and inform him of the vastly different trade in value both locations offered you and the implication that you were attemting to mislead them on the KBB value of your car.
When I traded in my Volvo, I was shocked at the value they gave me, on the WAY upper end. It was a 2010 hard top convertable. They gave me 29,950.00 and dropped the price on my XF by 1800.00. I've worked with them for several years with other Jaguars and my salesman told me that they were really trying to move the used stock as the new facelifts were on the way so they new there would be a lot of trade ins for it.
I hope you don't let this turn you off on the XF. Try the dealership owner and see if that helps. They need your business in this economy!!

OK, Now I'm shocked! I just noticed you are in NC as am I. Was the dealership Scott Jaguar? That's were I purchased my XF. And I know they have a lot of pre-owned XF's right now. I will tell you there is another dealer that has XF's more and more, Paramount motors, but they can be a bit sketchy. The Hickory dealership tends to work more with me and will bring in a car form their other locations for me. I acutually drove to the Asheville dealership to test drive an XF a couple years ago and they gave me a bad value on my car, then I had it brought to the Hckory dealership and the deal was MUCH better but I went with the Volvo. (don't ask me why!)
I'm really curious what dealer you went to.

It was actually Leith Jaguar in Cary............beautiful car and really bummed.

I may call the manager on Monday to discuss the situation. They have three dealerships on one lot Jaguar, Porsche, Audi and the salesman was dealing with the Porsche Manager on the numbers as the Jaguar manager must of been off. The insinuation that I was lying was what really ticked me off.
If you check KBB the value of the XF is $41,238 CPO for the XF (in excellent condition) and $12,725 for the Camry (in Very Good condition)
Not sure what they were thinking but I would walk in and buy the car straight away if the honored those numbers. I even had my title with me yesterday with the anticipation of making a deal.
I guess my call on Monday will determine where I go from here.

Thanks for the heads up on Scott......From Raleigh and never considered going to Charlotte but I just might have to go look at the 2011 XF premium that they have in Lunar Grey. Based on your experience with working with them are they flexible on the pricing and how far do you think they would come down on the $46,900 price.
Baffles my mind that they list $5500 above KBB and I do understand they need to make money but there is no way they pay KKB at auction.

The whole trade in value versus the price of the car you are purchasing is a shell game. As you noted, they try and move figures out of one to increase their profits in the other. All they care about is overall profit.
Best tactic is be clear you are discussing the price of the vehicle you are purchasing only. If and only if you can agree on an acceptable purchase price should you then start discussing the value of the trade in.
As you pointed out, the value of the trade in has no bearing on the price of the vehicle you are purchasing...
Cheers,
- Will

Here's the way I see it. According to NADA, clean retail adjusted for mileage is just under $44k. That's what the dealer would like. Clean trade is 39675. That's what the PO got if he stood his ground. Odds are, he didn't. So at $44k, the dealer stands to make $5k or more. I've got a friend in the industry that says most dealers will sell a car for $500 profit, but getting them there takes knowledge and persistence. I find the Jag dealers around Houston play hard ball, but other dealers even in the same owner group may work with you a bit more, especially if the car isn't moving.

I wasn't even serious about an XF until I saw one with 50kmi, CPO, just at ROUGH TRADE IN value per NADA and KBB. It was an 09 SC and it had been marked down to $30k the day before, and another customer signed papers on it while I was on my test ride. For me, the bar had been set. I'm not playing limbo, I'm jumping hurtles and I like them low. I wanted a clean car for a low price. I saw many, drove many, and walked away from most of them. I've even seen a few that had the extended warranty already, but the dealer didn't seem to know it and it was priced like it wasn't. There was one such that would have been mine, except for a leaper that was pointed a few degrees to starboard. I don't like the leapers anyway, but really couldn't live with a crooked one. I tried to get the price down with the crooked leaper, but the dealer didn't meet me. Eventually, I saw the price on that one drop to where my offer was but I had already landed my deal at one of their sister stores...
One Saturday night, a 2011 XF Prem showed up online, mileage at 32k, and asking $38k. First thing Monday morning I was there. The car was filthy with road grime, freshly traded. On the windshield was written in crayon "buy bid, do not detail". I used the leaper car as a bargaining chip, and offered $34. I was told the car was sold internally to a sister store in the "buy bid" process for $36k. So, they coudn't take my offer, but would let me have it for $36k. This was $500 below NADA rough trade. I took the car to a body shop and confirmed the car was structurally and mechanically sound, it just needed some wheel refurbishment (two bent rims and curb rash, common problems). At that price, the dealer was selling as-is. Any refurbishment would be on me. I took the car as is and had the wheels refurbed for $135ea. So I got a fine car at rough trade. Took a month of watching, walking, and waiting. Had it gone to the sister store, I'm sure they would have fixed the wheels and put it for sale for $42-$44k.
Here's another thing to consider, cars coming off of lease are obtained for far less than NADA rough trade. If the car was a lease, you have a better chance of getting a super deal. But the dealer doesn't want you to know that, so you need to be diligent and convincing in your arguments. Come armed with a stack of papers to back up your claims, play offers against each other. It's good to make offers via e-mail, that way you'll have counter offers in writing, otherwise dealers may try to keep you from leaving with papers in hand so you have less credibility in negotiating with other dealers.
BTW, the car you are looking at had tires put on it after only 1267 mi, it's in the CARFAX. If you are still interested in it, check that these are snow tires, otherwise be concerned about why tires were replaced. See also where the "wheels checked" three months later.
Also, keep your eye on wholesale to the public dealers, who are getting cars at auction just coming off of lease. They will definitely be more competitive than the Jag dealer. The Jag dealer may put more into the car for refurbishment, but you will pay for that in the end (with markup). And many of the off-lease cars will be in acceptable condition anyway.
So in summary, my rules of engagement are:
Dont' fall in love with "that one".
Have your price in mind.
Don't hesitate to walk away.
Happy hunting.

Not defending the dealership in any way, but don't always go by KBB. I actually find them to be useless, since the information they provide is always inaccurate.
After the debacle of Saturdays negotiations and leaving rather upset the salesman called me back today with a new offer. My first thought was to not even hear him out and just say not interested and hang up but I didn't want to give up the chance to give hime a piece of my mind which I did and won't go into the details.
So to sum it up he came back with an offer of $41,289 with existing warranty (until 12/2015 or 50,000 miles) or CPO at $43,435 (12/2016 or 100,000 miles............thoughts??

The fact that you could buy a 2012 that price still gets me, but those numbers are much better.
I say go for it, it is a Premium model, which is a big plus...... and i would spend the extra $2000 for the extended warranty. Otherwise you would have to pay twice as much later if you wanted to purchase it.
