Sold my 2010 XF Premium Luxury -- the Epilogue
In a separate post on this forum I had asked for suggestions on where to list my XF for sale. Well, I listed it on Craigslist for $5 last weekend and sold it within 24 hours. I got full asking price and one caller even offered me $600 over my asking price. I got several calls and emails about the car before taking down the ad. My wife didn't want people coming over to our house and wanted to sell it to Carvana or Carmax. I told my wife that all I needed was one looker and if he were serious, he'd buy the car right away. I got $6k more than what Carvana offered and $5k more than Carmax's offer. Not bad for a couple of hours of work. I priced it a little bit low but I was interested in a quick and easy sale. The buyer didn't even drive the car and paid me cash in full when he first saw the car. It was a smooth and easy transaction and the buyer (who was very nice himself) said this was the best car buying experience he ever had. This was his 7th Jaguar and he loved the car.
I just washed the exterior and cleaned the interior and posted 24 pictures of the exterior, interior, engine compartment and trunk. The car looked impeccable as always and the pictures said it all. Plus, I'm the original owner and I put that prominently in the ad.
My advice to those who plan to sell their car:
1. Clean and polish the car and make sure it looks great
2. Take lots of photos of the exterior in a nice setting
3. Clean the inside, engine compartment and trunk and take photos of all areas
4. If you're the original owner, say so right up front in the title of the ad
5. Research prices and price it a little bit low if you want a quick and easy sale. Remember there's a big spread between retail and wholesale, so you can easily get several thousand dollars more than wholesale even if your price is a bit lower than what a dealer might ask.
6. List all the standard and optional features in the ad. You might take it for granted that you have Bluetooth phone connectivity, but potential buyers may assume you don't have that unless you tell them.
In the end, I also got the satisfaction of selling the car to someone who appreciated the car and how I took care of it over the years, rather than selling it to a dealer whose only interest is making a quick buck.
As I said to my wife, for the first time in over 23 years, we are now Jaguar-less.
Thank you to all forum members over the years.
