Default Start Button

Hi....I am new here so have tons of questions. However, the one that has me puzzled right now is that the Start/Stop button does not always become a red pulsing button when entering and closing the door. Most of the time it works as advertised but when it does not, the button still starts the car. This is a '09 XF Supercharged (Mfg, about 10/08 I believe according to the CarFax) but registered in May '09 Thanks

It pulses when it senses the key. Try moving the key closer to the center console.

YEs, that does make sense, however I also noted that if I shut the door with more force, the button pulses.

The car won't start if it doesn't sense the key. It will display a message "smart key not found". You have a fault, probably in the door closed proximity switch. Do the interior courtesy lights go off after a few seconds if you do not try to start the car?

I have never got used to the "smart" key. When the car is locked and I approach it, it apparently senses the presence of the key and allows me to unlock the door. But if I open any door other than the driver's door, the alarm goes off. this is very irritating when we are out as family and my wife or kid opens their door before I do. if it knows a key is nearby, why care which door is being opened? And if it hasn't sensed the key, why are the doors unlocked?

Also, if my key is close to my phone (often it is, I only have two pockets) it senses the key and unlocks the door, but then the alarm goes off, presumably because the phone is blocking comms between the car and the key.

Sorry for slight thread hijack, but these things have been bothering me, and we have moved on to the subject of the key...

There is an issue there. I can open any door on the car without issue. Maybe replace the battery in the fob? The key has to be pretty close to the door for it to open. I think they should have boosted the range another foot or two. I do like how it senses when the key is left inside the car so it won't lock. It gave me a honk the other day when I tried to lock the doors. The key fell out of my pocket onto the seat. I grabbed the key and tried to lock it again but it still honked. I walked further away and then locked it with the fob. Seems to be a bit picky.

To the original poster. You could try moving the key closer to the console to see if it makes any difference and eliminate that as the cause. If it really is the door then like Jagular said it might be a sensor in the door giving you issues.

If it senses the key it blinks for a while but if you don't do anything just sit there for long the start button stops blinking. The press the brake pedal to start keeps blinking though.

My doors do not unlock when in proximity of the car. Is there a setting in security that activates this feature?

OK..the door sensor could be the problem, but now I don't have an issue if I close the door "firmly"....works every time. The car does not unlock until the handle is pulled....and then only the drivers door.....however, if you pull on the rear door handle before opening the drivers door , all of the doors unlock. Another point, the manual talks about the alarm system "re-setting itself" in two different locking modes, that will give you problems until you turn these systems off. Look up an read the manual regarding alarms settings.

The doors don't unlock automatically when you walk up to the car. They unlock when you pull on the door handle. There is a setting so that all doors or just the driver's door will unlock when pulling the drivers door handle.

I purchased an 09 SC in Feb and the key button sometimes does not pulse, and I have to puch the (dim) start key a couple of times, then the car starts! I am not sure that the technology is perfect.

There is an odd setting in vehicle settings that arms the alarm even if the doors are unlocked. There is also a known fault with the remote batteries not held in firmly enough. The update is different back pieces for the remotes, Jaguar TSB.

The start button should pulse as soon as you open the door if you have the key with you. It will then continue to pulse for about 30 seconds regardless of where the key is. The alarm should not go off if the car is unlocked with the remote or, if you have the smart key option, by approaching the car. The keyless entry was an extra cost option, not all cars have it. Without keyless entry the smart key is just an ordinary remote as far as unlocking the doors is concerned.

In vehicle settings is an option to unlock all doors and trunk with one unlock event or just the drivers door and trunk.
