Tilt Steering Wheel Noise

There are a number of posts in the archives about Tilt Wheel not working properly, but I didn't see any about the Tilt Wheel working properly but making occasional noise.

When my tilt wheel lowers, it occasionally makes a short"groaning" or rubbing sound, which lasts about a second. It doesn't delay the tilt, it just makes a brief noise as it starts. It seems tobe when the car has set in the sun, or has been idle for several days. The ServiceManager says this is not uncommon when the car has not been used for a while.

Since it is random and a small percentage of the time, I'mprepared to wait until it happens regularly, or something breaks.

Anyone else have this symptom?

I have the same issue and was given the same answer by the SA. I am sure once the car is out of warranty they will be more than happy to take care of it!

Tilt Steering Wheel Noise
Was a common problem. Had my cover replaced under warranty and it's never been heard from again.

Thanks for the comments. I think it sounds more like a rubbing (cover?) than a gear noise, so will suggest this sometime before the warranty runs out next spring.

The drive screws are dry dick. Tilt the wheel down, lift the sliding trim above the column that covers the gap between the i pack and column. Look inside and operate the motors. Youll see the drive screws, spray lube them well and noise gone, there are no parts needed

Mine makes a "groaning" noise when the wheel raises/lowers as I get in/out of the car. Is this the same problem (and therefore cured by the spray lube solution as well)?

I had this noise on mine, was told it was lubed. Done twice in 3 years of ownership, currently quiet

Thanks for all your replies. "Groaning" is probably the best description, altho mine only lasts a second, and only when it starts lowering. I'm headed out of town for a couple of weeks, but will definitely bring the suggestions to the Service Manager.

Sounds similar to what mine was doing.

Brutal would this also be the solution on the S Type since the XF and the S type are so closely related?

I am going to do it anyway.

Tilt Steering Wheel Noise
Good thing you quoted the previous message...that reply on it's own would have been awkward.

Drove about 1200 miles last two weeks, lots of sitting in the sun, pretty frequent groan. Stopped by the dealer today. Mechanic had not seen/heard the condition before, but lubed the drive mechanism. Will see if the noise reoccurs.

I forgot to say, thanks to all who confirmed the problem and recommended the solution - I was able to tell the SA that this was not an unusual problem.
