Default Tire opinion wanted

I found these Achilles ATR Sport tires very cheap and want to know what you guys think.

My fronts are like new but my backs are well spent. On front I have the OEM conti's.

Please no flaming, my goal is to get two Iowa late spring/summer/early fall seasons out of these (about 20000 miles) on the rear.

From what I can tell, these are not Chinese tires, and some of the reviews I have read have been average to good but I really have not been able to find anything about highway speed maneuvers and how stable they are.

Has anybody used these on a Jag or any other car?

Never heard of the brand before. I consider myself someone in the know when it comes to cars.

I would get proper tires. Sumitomos offer good tires for good price. You can look into them.

If not, Tirerack has the Conti's for $271 per tire.

Dude! Tires are sooooo critical to the driving experience. Why would you possibly skimp? And by the way, YOU OWN A JAG! Snap out of it.

I am with everyone else, I would not gamble on a tire brand that I had never heard of. You can find a good set of proven Kumho Ecsta 4X's or Azenis / Nitto 555s for about $100/tire less than the OEM conti's if you are trying to saving some money.

I'm always a bit wary of anything that seems a bit too inexpenive....

OTOH, I very well remember when Kumho tires were just coming on the market. Everyone said they'd never put such 'junk' tires on their Jag, you'd have to be a fool, you're risking your life, a proper motorcar deserves proper tires, blah blah.

Nowadays Kumho tires are widely recommended

Tires are not how you want to save a few bucks. Tires and brakes first, everything else comes second.

Thanks Doug, that was what I am thinking as well.

People laughed at me when I but Sumitomo tires on my Vette back 10 years ago and now they are considered good tires.

I realize that tires mean everything on how a car handles and rides. That is why I asked if anybody had experience with this brand.

I personally feel that tires are very over price for what they are, how their made and what materials go into them.

I would be a fool to spend more money than needed without at least looking at options.

I agree.

Do some research, learn a bit, shop around, analyze your driving conditions and habits....and buy according to your need.

Naturally you don't want to go below minimum requirements/specifications but there's no point in spending more than you need to, either.

Cheers

Hi, new member here and first post, although I have been lurking for a couple of months!

I fitted Achilles ATR Sport tires to my previous car, in 245/35-ZR19 size, because they had good reviews and were remarkably cheap. One third the price of well known brand name tires from Michelin, Pirelli etc.
I found they were very good for wear, road noise and dry grip, but a bit average for wet grip.
Apparently the update version (ATR Sport 2) has much improved wet grip, and it costs not much more than the 'old' version.

Thanks Oz!

Do you mine telling me what car you fitted them on?

Looking for comparable weight cars to the XF.

My previous car was a Mitsubishi 380.
Based on the 9th generation US Mitsubishi Galant.
3.8 litre V6 NA manual, which I tweaked a bit (chipped, extractors, full exhaust etc) to put out around 300 hp and 350 ft/lb. It went pretty well and surprised many V8s!
About 200 lbs less weight than an XF, and FWD v RWD.

Holy crap Oz, are you my twin?

My last car was a 6th gen Galant VR4.

Way too may things done to mine. I sold it after modifying it to 361 hp at all 4 wheels (about 430 crank bhp).

Here is a link to the car.

I agree with Doug about brand names and now are accepted as good tires. I still don't trust Sumitomo even though they've been proven. I really wouldn't care too much about brand names but I would be worried about mixing tires front to rear. I'd be leary with Conti's on front and something different on the back, could lead to unpredictable handling. Just my 2 cents.

Seriously guys, Sumitomo, all the Korean and Japanese tire makers have disappointed me every time. If you are in this car buy a top line Michelin, Pirelli or Continental tire and enjoy. Why put an $80,000 dollar car that's relatively heavy on marbles, poorly designed carcasses or supersoft rubber? I'm all for a deal but you really do get what you pay for in a tire.

I replaced the OEM Hankooks on my XFR with Michelin Pilots and they give a much coarser road feel. I can't really tell any grip difference yet...

So do I…..I think there is more road noise but the ride and the grip is great. How many miles do you have on them and how are they wearing ?

My car had Dunlap Sport Maxx on the fronts so, not wanting to spend $500 a tire for the rears I got some Direzza 101s. Same tread pattern, same ratings for handling, only difference I've seen so far is the price.

I have Dunlop Sport Maxx Js on the front and rears too (XFR). $360 a tire. I need new rears and will check out the Direzza 101s. I love the Dunlops bit that's a lot of money for a set of 4.

Made my decision.

I am replacing the rear tires with BFG G-Force Sport Comp 2.
