Default TPMS System Failure, reprogram unit or replace with new unit

Hey guys,

I've got that common Tire Pressure Monitoring System failure issue; the one where it's not a single tire that's failing but rather the whole system is not working. This problem was present with my summer tires (that run stock TPMS units in the wheels) and my winter tire (also running stock TMPS units in the wheels)

I've read the all the threads and have eliminated the possibility of this being caused by a phone charger. I have NOT done the reset technique of dropping the pressure by 25% with the ignition off and then refilling the tires with the ignition on.

I have two questions:

1. Does the reset technique have any effect with the "system failure" notification type that I am receiving (warning is on 100% of the time when driving the car)?

2. I'm aware that there is a TSB for a software update for the transmit/receive unit under the passenger front seat. The Jag dealer is going to charge me 1 hour of labor ($150) to do the software update, as the car is out of warranty. I'm worried that this will not solve my issue as I suspect the unit itself is bad.

Or should I just buy a new unit for $175 and install it myself (not worried about install). But then may still be on the hook for another $150 to get the new unit reprogrammed at the dealership.

I know it's only a question of a few hundred $, but any money I save on stupid little repairs can go toward track days come springtime

Another alternative is to disable the TPMS completely and be rid of the whole thing.

I have the same issue and it's going in on 1/17. Fault light on 100% of the time and the other tire warning light sometimes does round robin tire to tire.

I had this on my old XF as well. I think it's an easy / inexpensive fix by the dealer but I will report back when I pick mine up on 1/17 with cost.

Did you ever get this fixed? What was it?

I'm in the same boat, constant TPMS fault on 6 month old OEM in tire sensors. I had the TPMS control unit software updated a couple years ago back under warrantee. Car is '12 XF 5.0 na.

Think twice about disabling TPMS.

Was traveling on freeway at 75 mph when TPMS light went on suddenly. Pull across 4 lanes of freeway immediately. When I got to shoulder tire completely flat.

If I would have kept traveling would have experienced high speed tire blow out. TPMS avoided catastrophe that had the potential of life threatening injuries.

TPMS is there for a reason. IT SAVES LIVES..

Go to a mechanic who has SDD and have it diagnosed. Upgrade software if necessary.
1) batteries in the TPMS go bad after about 4 -5 years.
2) If you change TPMS and the TPMS warning start, you may have the wrong TPMS sensor (frequencies matter)
3) If the mechanic can't find the issue, go the last route of disabling them. I know there is a thread out there about how to do that.

mine has been throwing system fault errors recently. it'll come on for a day and then go off for a few weeks.

It also doesn't really work. Even years after it's initial introduction, they still regularly experience problems, often resulting in the entire system being useless, and false positives. A lot, in my experience. Even with brand new cars.

Ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?

Unhappy Tire Pressure Monitoring Issue

I had the same issue with my 2010 XF. I tried the under inflate over inflate fix as described here but it did not work. Tire guys said 2 of the sensors were bad. $800 later all were replaced and all was well. Seems HIGH. Then 3 days later the round robin tire warnings reappeared. Tire guys said sensors were working fine but suspect a module malfunction that only the dealer could diagnose.... Sure enough they confirmed the problem and replaced the module. So far it is working fine but I'm out another $800!!
