There has been much debate and posts on what oil to put in your 5.0L v8 engines. I am now off of JLR warranty and am considering going to non-JLR mechanics for my servicing.

It is a safe bet to just use the Castrol/JLR co-developed EDGE Titanium Pro oil but its only sold at dealerships. I am hoping I can even buy it separately at the parts counter at the dealership. Other non-recommended oils are out there but none directly say they "meet" the oil specifications.

I have also read on another post that JLR recommends a high oil change interval of 15000Miles or 1YR (W.C.F). The interval recommendation is not to be quoted on because first of all there is no oil change interval in my Owners Manual. 2nd of all, the JLR dealerships in my area all tell me different intervals - meaning its dealership defined. JLR's recommendation I would say is basically when your dash light comes on and service message pops up (this is also what a JLR forman technician told me).

To help decide which oil to use in this engine, would like to know what oil do you use in your engine and what intervals do you change it at. Feel free to give a brief description on why you picked that oil / interval.

Hoping to keep these 5.0s for long seeing that they are more rare on the streets.

 

I use Walmart Supertech 100% synthetic 0w20, at $17.99 for 5 qts. Its SAE, API and Dexos certified. I change it every 3 to 4kmi, and I change the filter every other oil change. I buy my filters in bulk on Ebay, Amazon or Alibaba. I've NEVER been a fan of long oil drain intervals and if you google "long oil change interval damage" you'll see why.

 

All the parts counters around me at the Jag dealer say they only have the Castrol in drums and can't sell quarts. I don't know if that's true, or they just don't want you to buy it so you have to pay them. I was able to buy a very similar Castrol for my Range Rover Sport from the dealer.

In the Jags, I am using the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum that was supposedly approved by Jaguar.

 

any full synthetic oil now will meet or exceed the made up specification made to scare people into buying the oil at the dealership. I use Castrol Full synthetic in 0w20 which is the same oil used in new Toyota's and I change my oil every 8k which for me is about 6 months

 

Ask the independent what oil they use. I would be totally happy with Castrol Edge as sold to the public. There will probably be an oil specification in the Owner Handbook, and it is then a matter of checking what specs the oil meets against the recommendation. Oil changes at about 10-15k are perfectly OK with most high-performance oils, it is neglect that ruins engines so filter replacement is probably the most important part of the oil change, and not letting things slide. When a lot of miles build up on a car, the oil consumption goes up, so regular level checks become very important.

Your money, your car, your choice. If you plan to keep it for less than a year or two, why even bother with maintenance?

Put that money to better use - Green fees and the Clubhouse!

 

Personally I have been using RoyalPurple in my cars for a couple of years now and have never been disappointed.
The XF will be seeing the same thing... but the 5W-20 variant... and I will be changing it twice a year, no matter the millage (before and after winter - winter in Canada lasts 6 months pretty much )

 

I cannot stress enough others' sentiment about regular oil changes - oil is cheap. Take it from my personal experience, it's a f**k of a lot cheapest than a full engine rebuild. Trust me on that one.

Ignore the service light and pick an interval - I'll probably be running with 5k miles - and change the oil every interval and just reset the service light when it comes on.

I'm of the firm belief that the main reason for longer service intervals is to reduce car manufacturer's in-warranty service costs. Sure, the oil companies claim long service intervals etc and I'm sure there's been sooooooo much technological development in the world of oil to allow this, but personally I think regular oil changes not only keep the oil reasonably clean but also ensure a reasonably frequent level reset.

As I said in that thread I change the oil every six months and I'm sticking to that practice!

 

Completely with you. Oil is cheap, comparatively. Plus with these engines especially it's as much as making sure there's enough in it as anything else.

There's a lot of Internet "experts" who will argue this, much like with transmission oil, but really, what's the absolute worst you can do by changing oil before the recommended service interval? Waste a bit of money? I'm ok with that, like I said: oil is cheap, comparatively.

I'd much rather (for example) run Walmart 5W20 and change every 3 months than run OEM oil and change every 18-24 months.

Bottom line... as a guy who use to go to the track, I never really went by the recommendation of the car manufacturer. Use oil based on the "application" you need. If you are a more spirited driver, don't be afraid to go outside that range AFTER you do your own research.

For normal driving conditions, what the car manufacturer recommends usually is OK... but then again, it depends a lot on the temperature ranges you are living in.
Is not abnormal to use a thinner W oil if winters are harsh in your area and then during the warmer seasons to go back to a thicker W oil - just make sure that the number after W stays the same. (Ex.: 0W30 in the winter and 5W30 in the summer).

And no, from my experience, brand name is just a choice. Any will do just fine... what does matter is the group of the oil.

But how often and with what oil will you use from here out with your newly rebuilt engine?

So far I have stuck to the 1 year/15K miles interval on my 2014 XJR but being old I am MUCH more comfortable changing it like Bigg Will does!
After I go off factory warranty that will be the last time I use the special Castrol juice! And it will be changed MUCH sooner than 15K miles too.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with my fellow pomme here r.e. oil change intervals: I don't do anything unusual with my cars, so see no reason why I should ignore any manufacturer's recommendations and invent my own. Each to their own though!

The bit mentioned about start/stop reducing emissions (on the linked thread) isn't 100% true - starting an engine provides a spike in emissions compared to typical running, so the engine needs to be off for a few seconds to make up for this spike (I think around 5-7 seconds).

 

Every 5k. Probably OE Castrol but would consider others.
