Carmine,

I've moved your question from X260 (for 2015 onwards) to X250 (for 2007 - 2015) forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your 2011 model.

Graham

Good question, never heard of it myself either. I googled it and was amazed ! Sounds worth investigating for sure

It improves emissions during startup.

So if you have a 2011 XF with a 5.0 V8, your engine does not have secondary air pump. As far as I know that is a relic from the 4.2 V8 motors. Down on the left side of your 5.0 ( left as viewed from the front) is a vacuum pump which operates continuously when the engine runs.
The AC compressor is on the other side of the engine (left as viewed from the drivers seat)

When you say it 'comes on' what exactly do you mean?

I suspect that it is the AC compressor. The fact that the AC is turned off does not prevent the AC compressor from running---if the climate control system is on auto, or if the defrost mode is selected the AC will run. This is all explained in the Owners Manual

But why would it only run for one minute? And how would he know it's running, it shouldn't make any noise?

Yes we are definitely short of information. The AC compressor on my car is does not make any audible noise. (My wife says I am deaf anyway.)
