Hi all
my 2010 Jaguar XF 3.0d broke down today on the way to work it juddered then died now turns over but won't start.
it happened at 0330 on a duel carriageway so was recovered and they just took me straight home now I am thinking fuel starvation for a start I have removed the back seat and the cover off the fuel tank to get to reveal the fuel pump but when I turn the ignition on I can't hear anything coming from the tank.
should I not hear the pump making a noise also is there a way to test if fuel is getting towards the engine I.E. if I was to remove one of the connectors off the engine fuel filter and turn the engine over to see if fuel is coming through.
any help would be much appreciated.
many thanks
There's a low pressure pump that takes fuel to the fuel filter & from there to the high pressure pump on the back of the engine, which then supplies the fuel rail/injectors.
There should be codes set for this issue & they'll point you at the problem(s).
Yes, you're better off removing the feed pipe on the fuel filter & if you're not getting fuel when turning over it's very likely the low pressure pump. On the other hand, if you can't hear it clicking the LP pump sounds dead.
EDIT:- You know they never sold the diesel in the US ? Try www.jaguarforum.com in UK where there are many diesels.

Hi all
Think I have sorted it the low preasure fuel pump was silent I took it out connected a battery to it and it started to work don't know why but could not rely on it so I have swapped it for a used one I have brought and hope it fixes it.
You say the fuel filter was full but maybe it was blocked. I had that problem several years ago. Engine didn't stop but went into limp mode.
I changed the filter and all was good!
You should be able to hear it clearly with back seat and cover removed, I can hear the hum of mine from drivers seat. You can test if diesel is making it to the engine bay by removing the center hose on filter, it will pump out of filter fast if pump starts so best to put a piece of fuel hose on it and in to a bottle, worth checking how clean fuel is too, mine somehow had black bits floating in it. The car didn't appreciate it much funnily enough..
