Default XF V8 5L Supercharged 2009 - Gear Box Failure

Hi

I am new to the site and have registered because i have a problem. I have a 2009 5L V8 Supercharged XF which has only done 122,000 kms (approx 70-80k miles). It has a full Jaguar dealership service history (every 6 months). The other day I was driving at about 100 kph and the car juddered as the gear didn't seem to engage. A message came up 'failed gearbox' but when i turned the car off and on again it disappeared and the gears worked fine. I took it into the dealership (who have a history of providing the most costly solution) and they said they found traces of metal in the gearbox oil and that I need a new gearbox at the cost of 11k GBP. They haven't been able to tell me exactly what has broken though and because of their previous history I don't trust them.

Has anyone else had any experience with such an error and if so what was the solution?

I am at you mercy

Thanks

Jonpaul

I don't have any personal experience but these links may be helpful.

Jonpaul - I am not familiar with services available at your location but, here in the US it is very easy to Google and find an independent oil-testing outfit for your transmission oil. They should be able to tell from a small sample exactly what, if any, kind of metal and how much is in the oil.

I once had a transmission failure alarm come on in my '05 XK and it went into "limp mode". Same as yours, I pulled over, shut the car down, restarted and all was fine. Took it to the dealer under warranty and they simply reflashed the transmission module and had no problem with it beyond that. Hope your issue/solution will be as easy as mine was.

And if it is a gear ratio fault code first thing to do would be a tcm ecu reflash and adaptations clear. I dont think they know or are just jumping on the "theres a fault replace it" what i said is directly from zf. Better to know the codes pulled than the oil sample

$20k for a new transmission. They must be joking.

The car probably is worth just over $20k. Just keep driving and if it reappears go to a good independent jaguar mechanic for another opinik.

That price seems way out there??

I would try this place before I spent any money. They really know ZF transmissions.

It's just the regular 6 speed ZF. It's not even a rare transmission anymore. I mean Ford used it in the Navigator!

You may be able to have the testing done by this company, as you mail the sample:

Blackstone-labs.com

As Brutal is a technician, would follow his advice but the test doesn't cost much.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the advice guys. The garage has said they found several pieces of metal in the gearbox oil and that the problem is with 3rd and 4th gear. Still, shouldn't happen to a 5 year top of the range model. I ve written to the corporate office to get their opinion. I ll let you know what the say. Thanks
JP

The garage has now come back to me and instead of 11k GBP they now say its 6k GBP. This shows they were trying to rip me of in the first place! Still waiting for corporate to contact me though.

A small thing, but it's a 4.2l rather than 5.0l, at least in North America.

I hate to say this but my own experience is the UK mechanical shops are the pits, they are especially worrying for expensive cars. It is something about there business and trade ethics.

Call Jaguar. Ask for assistance. That is unusual for that vehicle.
