Default 2003 xjr thump sound

Hi Guys,

wondering if anyone has had this issue.

I get a thump sound when hitting a bump " sideways " that seems to come from dash area.

Heres what I mean, if i hit a speed bump head ( both wheels at the same time) no noise ...but lets say im getting in a driveway while turning into it ...or if i hit a speed bump sideways one wheel first that causes one side of the car to be higher than the other then I get a thump sound.

I took it to my jag Mechanic who checked it out and took it for a spin. He says there may be something loose in the dash that is causing this noise ...like a bolts isnt tied down or something. To me its suspension related but he says hes checked everything and all is fine.

Seems kinda odd...any ideas ?

I'd suspect a swaybar issue. Try having someone else drive while you listen, it may help narrow down where it's coming from.

Hi jameson,

In addition to Rob's suggestion of a sway-bar issue, a couple of other things that can cause a knocking sound that may seem to come from the dash are the front shock upper mountings, part 8 in the diagram below, although I would expect you to hear the sound even when hitting bumps straight:

Or the front crossmember/subframe Vee-mounts (Part 5) or rear pivot bushes (Parts 2):

Other things that come to mind are an outer or inner tie rod end, steering rack mounting bracket, or something in the steering column. Do you feel any motion in the steering wheel when you hear the knock? Any unusual treadwear on your front tires?

Problems with the rear engine mount/transmission mount usually cause knocks that come from the center console rather than the dash.

Please keep us informed!

Cheers,

Don
