Default Can Fuel Pump fail intermittently?

Hey Guys,
Twice in the last few weeks the 01 VDP 94K after being driven for approximately 30 minutes, followed by sitting at idle in park for 5 Mins has studdered and stalled. Immediate multiple attempts to re-start produce very rough idle, no response to pedal and subsequent stall.

First time - after a few hours it started and operated normally, although the car was not driven.

Yesterday - I kept reproducing the same result with one 10 minute period of normal operation (in park) followed immediately by the same rough idle and stall.

I attempted to turn the key while listening for the pump and heard it once out of 7 - 10 attempts. (Once pump is primed will it cycle every time key is turned, or only after a period of time?).

Car had fuel filter replaced yesterday morning (while doing tensioner job) so this has occured both prior to and following filter replacement.

I swapped one relay in the trunk - but had no change in symptom.

Question: can a fuel pump fail intermittently? And, any other thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

there's a schrader valve on the fuel injection rail for you to connect a fuel pressure tester, it should be around 40psi on cranking - pump should prime every time. It's a common enough fault (fuel pump failure). Plenty of posts about swapping it out.

Yup could be the lead wires so when u ****** it out check those too. It will be an all day project and make sure u are careful with the fuel lines at the tank.

I'm with Sean. Check the fule pressure with a test guage before you even consider tearing out the tank. It is not much fun!

Default Update

Had the car on Snap-On fuel pressure monitoring and after running for an hour and 10 minutes went from 40psi to 15 sputtered and stalled. My Mechanic had a great read out showing the amps and current draw. New Pump going in tomorrow.
