The fuel tank ground strap is missing. It was attached to the tank when it was on the "bench". Now it is nowhere to be seen.

The ground strap is important with respect to discharging static electricity, especially when in motion and even more so during refueling.

So ...

Where are the two endpoints?

One is at the left top of the tank towards the rear seat? There is a hole in the tank flange that looks like it would be for a heavy ground wire. Correct?

The other end would be where?

Memory says it is about 10 inches long, maybe 10AWG.

You would think that an 8 hour tab would cover this.

Additionally, was there not a thick closed cell foam pad on top of the tank almost from side to side?

Bit late now, but I had made a note of this thread from earlier in the year.

Look at the post with the video from Test Point (don't think it was his video).

Scroll to 11.12 and you will see the ground strap (top left of the tank leading towards the rear firewall.)

I viewed the video and saved 2 screen shots. I also used JTIS and found the Fuel tank R&I that shows the fuel tank ground cable to be removed.

Here is the screen shot of the fuel tank with the foam pad (the foam pad is also missing on our 2001 xj8 fuel tank):

Try calling Nalley Jaguar to see if you can get the fuel tank ground cable.

Also try some of the auto wrecking yards in your area.

Sorry about all the trouble this repair shop has caused you.

In a pinch you can make up a decent ground cable - a pair of 'O' connectors to a heavier gauge 12V cable in black would be pretty much identical.

 

Theyre also bolted to the fill tube

 

The pad is missing because it's a pain in the XXXX to put it back on.
On top of that, the pad is NLA from jaguar.
BTW, the pad is not foam but rather lile a short pile carpet with a wax type of backing.
Some were black (later) and some gray (earlier)_
Also the picture is from an early XJ8 with the fuel sender/wiring in the center.
later model had the sender/wiring on the top and cam buckle instead of rods and bolts for the fuel tank straps

 

Thanks for your efforts Jim. Seeing a picture of the pad is better than relying on memory since at the time I was only interested in accessing the connector and not really looking at the pad itself.

 

Anyone got a picture of the later one?

Anyhow, when the pad is present and someone is paying for the job, difficulty should not be an excuse for not putting it back.

 

BTW, a CEL and "check gas cap" message that started after the first long drive after the job was found to be caused by ...

the crossover hose left dangling in the wind at the left charcoal canister.

Easy fix, but it should not be up to the customer to find and fix out of town!
