shifter stuck

There is a black plastic "screw" on the left side next to the shift knob on top of the J-Gate.
Unscrew that plastic screw and beneath there is the shifter lock latch.
With a screwdriver (or something long and round) you can push the safety "switch" that locks the shifter in "P".
While pushing the "switch" down you should be able to shift out of "P".
If that solves your problem - the safety switch/latch is normally operated by a solenoid. That could be the culprit.
HTH!
Cheers,
David

Thanks,David. I will try over the weekend. I could actually shift to D but the colume does not actaully "click" in the right gear as the D word does not turn red. Car is like running between N and D.
Car was towed just a block , I don't know if it casued any damage. A little fraustrated. Thanks helping me and good weekend to come

It is **possible** that all that is wrong, is that that the shifter cable is out of adjustment for some reason. Basically, you have to first get the console out of the way. Then you shift the transmission to get the gearbox into neutral. Then you adjust the locknuts on the right side of the shifter assembly to get the lever to be centered on the N position. After which the console should read D when the tranny is in drive. This is all explained in detail in the JTIS and in other threads on this forum.

Here is a video link that describes how to get to the cable adjustment referenced above thanks to Rev Sam.
