I extracted these Transmission Removal & Install instructions & illustrations from the JTIS21 Shop Repair Manual back in Oct 2010 when our 2001 XJ8 needed a new forward drum replacement. We decided to have the transmission completed rebuilt.

I give our Indy mechanic a printout of these 2 PDF files that I created to use for the removal & reinstall for XJ (except XJR):

The XJR has the Mercedes Transmission removal & install are a little different than the XJ8.

is it hard to put the merc transmission in an xj, or is it not even possible?

 

For a tranny swap it isn't a bad job....I find getting the exhaust on and off the biggest pita.

 

Oh...I misunderstood your question. Do you mean swapping from the ZF 5HP box to a Merc box for a supercharged car? I have no idea how to do that.
