Default 2011 Jaguar XJL Rear Turn Signal

Hello All,
i am new to the forum and need some help with a hyper blinking turn signal indicator. When I turn on the left turn signal, the front signal activates, the mirror signal activates, but nothing in the rear. Here are a couple of questions. 1) Could the module be bad? 2) is the turn signal light/led in the rear assembly bad? 3) can I replace the light/led without replacing the entire assembly?

Thanks in advance

Brian, for your problem, it can be a few things that will need to be diagnosed. I would start with accessing the rear tail light and connecting a multimeter between the blue-green wire (pin 3) and the black ground wire (pin 12). With the multimeter set to monitor for 12 VDC, see if you can see the multimeter shifting back and forth between 12 VDC and 0 VDC (probably spend most of its time on 0 with a quick blip to 12 VDC based on what you are seeing). If you see the voltage change, then this pretty much confirms that the problem is isolated to the tail light itself. Unfortunately, the tail light is sealed and would require replacing the tail light.

If you are not seeing the voltage change, then you need to repeat the test at the central junction box between pin 32 (blue-green wire again) and the chassis. If you are seeing a voltage change, then you have a bad wire between the fuse box and the tail light and you will need to hand over hand the wiring to find the portion that has been damaged (any work been done on the car recently where they would have pulled up the carpet to access something? if so, start in that area). I don't see it being a loose connector since both the left and right tail lights go through the same connector/cable bundle and you would be seeing more problems than just this one thing. If you are not seeing a voltage change, then you have a bad module inside the central junction box and most likely you will need to have the central junction box replaced as the module is a part of the box.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

It does sound like the assembly/cluster needs replacing from your description.
There are four LED strings in each assembly - the reverse lamps, the headlamps and parking lamps, the brake lamps and the indicator lamps. On a 2011 (pre-LED front lamps) each side's parking lamp and indicator lamp share a supply fuse each so if the fronts are working something is wrong with the rear. It is a single non-serviceable component which is heat-staked and bonded so a real pig to get into. For a £90 used part it isn't worth trying to repair.

Removing the assembly is pretty easy:

1) Remove the rear boot/trunk plastic cover (a couple of screws then it clips off by pulling firmly upwards).
2) Pull the weather strip out of the way of the left assembly.
3) Pull forward the rear left side carpet trim to expose three nuts (two on the back, one on the top).
4) Remove the nuts and lift the lamp out, top first then bottom. The connector is clipped in behind it. Note those nuts are not necessarily tightened fully when reassembling as they are used to adjust the closing gap to get it even.

I would check the connector is sound before replacing the lamp assembly. Remove and reconnect it a few times to be sure. If it is still faulty only then replace it.
