2012 XJ - Changes due to Roof Popping
After concluding there are three type of XJs - roofs that pop, roofs that will eventually pop (even after getting fixed), and roofs that pop but where the drivers are too oblivious to notice it - Jaguar will make the following change to the 2012 XJ line up:
- XJP (P, for Pop), which comes with a popping roof.
- XJD (D, for drop), which will be equipped with a pair of drop down ear plugs that descend from the roof in the event of detectable interior cabin popping noises. Please secure your own ear plugs before putting them on passengers.
- XJSE - (SE, for special edition), a special Orville Redenbacher edition of the car that comes with a "Pop Button" (next to the winter mode button). Press the button when you anticipate a forthcoming bumpy road, driveways, speed bumps, or just a pebble in the road, and the car (with has some of the latest technology), will automatically and instantaneously detect a pop and instantly increase the radio volume 150 decibels so as to drown out the popping noise. If the radio is off, it will instantly turn it on (playing something by deep purple). Of course, this feature will only work when the stereo system is not locked up or frozen.
- XJSP (SP, for Super Pop). Jaguar recognizes that some XJ buyers actually like the roof popping. To satisfy this niche, the XJSP will be specially designed so that the roof pops, even when not driving over bumps or inclines. The XJSP is programmed so that it will randomly make popping noises, even if the car is not in motion.
As a special promotion, Jaguar will give away a free Cuisinart CPM-900 “Easy Pop” Popcorn maker for the first 100 2012 XJs bought or leased. This model is designed to be powered by the AC adapters in the car. And now, you can enjoy fresh popcorn while you drive your XJ and revel in the melodious roof popping of a fine English saloon.

The roof popping is definitely an issue, but like I have stated previously, it can be fixed permanently by a competant dealer. I have had zero problems with mine for the last 10 months.
Good luck with your new CLS63--there is nothing magical at MB either. They have their issues too.
I also have a CLS63. Also has a few minor noises but nothing like the roof thing. Overall though the CLS is less comfortable and bit rougher, tighter sportier. And as they are not direct competitors (size) that is what it should be. I for once got tired of my CLS63 and wanted something more comfortable without msising the power. And I got exactly what I wanted.
