I have not done the coolant leak test or combustion gases in the coolant test yet, but quick question - if I can smell burning coolant, would that not indicate it is more likely just a coolant seepage type leak rather than a head gasket leak? He asks hopefully... Thanks.

 

Could be both problems. You'll just need to do the tests.
