Affraid that the engine is dead and gone! XJ-L 5.0L V8
Hello,
Earlier today I was driving to a friend of mine, when I passed a slow-driving car. I started to hear some weird noise, only when the accelerator was pushed around 5-10%. Fast ratteling sound.
10 minutes later I arrived my destination and shoot the video. I decided to call for road assistance and get it to a workshop as soon as possible. It took about 2-3 hours until the assistance arrived. When I started the car, it was barely staring with a much worse metal ratteling sound, some times almost howling.
It's currently delivered at a local workshop. I'm worried that the engine is basically dead and gone.
Does this sound like a typically recognizable type of problem?
To me, that soudns like a broken connecting rod which would be pretty much fatal for the engine. Granted, I would also suspect a check engine light on that cylinder saying that the cylinder is running rich/misfiring. So, I could be way off. I would say see what the shop says and go from there. I guess it could also be a broken valve spring and what you are hearing is the cylinder hitting the valve and pushing it back up into its hole. But, I would think that again, you would be getting an error code and something like that normally doesn't last long before something gets bent/stuck.
Particularly symptomatic of a shell bearing failure is that combination of a squeak, and a knock. It most definitely sounds like a main bearing, big end, or small end.
How old is that car and how many miles? Service history?
