Aftermarket Exhaust Opinios
I have been thinking about a new exhaust. I can get a full custom exhaust that is identical to the one below for about 1/3 the price built and installed with tips. Because my car is a 3.0 S/C it doesn't sound to impressive when it starts. It does have a little bit of a nice sound if you really step on it but that's about the only time. I'd be curious to hear some feedback and/or opinions on this setup.

Z20, most mufflers have what is called a "series number" associated with them. The lower the number, the less restrictive they are and therefore will be more likely to cause you problems. Also, the lower the series number, the louder they tend to be too. From my experience, you should be fine going with say a 50 series muffler as this will free up the exhaust, allowing you to make more power while not opening it up enough to cause you problems. Going with a 40 series muffler or even going straight pipe, you may find that you will run into issues. Granted, I know there is atleast 1 XJ that is running around with straight pipes and is having no issues. Granted, he is running a 5.0L motor. So, that may change things.
I put a 70 series muffler on my truck and at idle there wasn't much difference, but you put your foot into it and it let you know that there was something different back there. While the power gains were nothing to write home about, there was a slight change. that was with a Magnaflow muffler.

Thanks Thermo for some added info about exhaust. It's a roughly a $2k cat-back full system and the person doing the exhaust is very qualified. I just want to make sure that it's not a bigger hassle than it's worth. Trying to avoid any exclamation points/triangles in any and every color.
Stuart I was able to buy this car at a great price so didn't really get to choose options or shop around. Initially I was hesitant about the smaller engine but the gas mileage has made me very pleased with this car. I don't drive very fast so the extra hp seems to be wasted with me. When I drive the S8 I only really step on it about once a month so I know that the extra hp in that car is definitely being wasted with me. I think I've gotten older and don't really like getting pulled over anymore, lol. And the meme was awesome!

Z20,
You made a very sane and rational choice, but for me at this stage of the game it's more about being a little bit crazy and ignoring conventional wisdom. I'll probably never floor it to to the redlinine, and agree with you about lots of wasted horsepower but it sure is a lot of fun every once in a while. I doubt that anyone buys their XJ for its fuel economy, but I'm amazed at 16 mpg in city driving with 470HP thanks to the 8-speed transmission and stop-start. No comparison from a driving standpoint to my previous LS460.

I had a LS600h when they first came out and it was a nice car but not very fast at all. The biggest problem with that car is it made no noise and people would very often just walk right in front of me in parking lots and then look so surprised. It took some getting used to.
I know it's hard to tell from an iPhone video. I'n your opinion how does the sound of the Jaguar's exhaust in the video compare to your exhaust? Or how does it compare to an "R" if you have heard one in person?

I can't say how that exhaust compare to mine, since I've never heard how mine sounds from outside the car. But based on the sound in the cabin, I doubt that mine is as loud as the one in the video. You might want to check YouTube for XJ Supercharged and XJR exhaust videos.
