AJ133 Engine Noise / Ticking 5.0 XJL Supercharged
My XJR has a similar noise when it is cold, but dissapears after 5 minutes idling...sounds pretty much like yours I think. As you can see in the "warmer" video, it suddenly dissappears. I don't have any codes either and the car runs perfectly fine. Sometimes I can feel a slight vibration inside the car when idling though. No idea where it comes from.
It does sound similar. I was at the shop yesterday and they will be inspecting the internal FEAD pulley/harmonic balancer to see if that's the cause. If so it may need replacement.
Since I've been without my car for like 6-8 months I got a little bored. I ended up purchasing an F Pace SVR to keep me busy in the meantime.

Good troubleshooting and very thorough too! Gotta LOVE those Aluminum front cooling pipes too!
One thing to check?
We have seen one lower pulley separate from VAP. Is there any wobbling in the lower pulley? The one we saw was not too obvious.
This should be easy to check as you can remove the SC belt and run the car with no problems and you will quickly hear if the sound has changed..

The shop's owner suggested going back to the dampened OEM crank setup and I agreed with that approach. He said the VAP crank pulley looked fine when he removed it and gave it back to me.
I wasn't satisfied with this answer and took a look at the crank - it did look normal (covered in grime and dirt). So i blasted it with brake clean and lo and behold I have this condition (picture attached) It may be from overtorque at installation but that was over 4 years ago and the T55 bolts were a nick over hand tight according to the owner.
I'm glad there's an explanation that actually makes sense. In any case, I am going back to stock since I just picked up an F Pace SVR and want some new wheels first.
There is a witness mark and basically an area I can see daylight through. VAP made some design changes in the latest crank pulley which I purchased but decided not to reinstall - I think if I do this again I will find a pulley with larger surface area and thickness.

Wow! That's the first time I have seen a cracked lower pulley. So glad you found it BEFORE it came apart. This is a new reason for engine ticking noises too. Will need to add this to the possible causes. The pulley that wobbled did not cause any noise. At least none was reported.
Have you contacted VAP? I use them and find their responses and service to be great? I am sure they would want to see it too?
One comment about the shop? I guess he does not understand the lower pulley set up? The actual crankshaft damper is not removed or even disturbed? These lower pulleys are super easy to install because of this. They simply bolt to the outside of the existing damper. So stock or after market pulley you are still running the OEM crankshaft damper which I think is a good thing.

Yeah, it does seem unusual. Annular cracking is unusual and considering my damper seemed fine, this is a sign of stress. I do see a small depression around one of the fasteners so I think it was initially overtorqued.
I had not contacted VAP, I just did the cleaning today and will send them a photo - initially I thought it was belt noise and they helped confirm all my part numbers were correct. Regarding the shop's comments on dampening, I agree - I had the conversation with him. Some of it is semantics, the dampener is sold as one Jaguar PN, two stacked pulleys and the OEM crank pulley adds additional harmonic dampening with the rubber design. We were concerned that we might have to replace the whole damper assembly - the risk being the crank bolt being properly installed or not. It's always a risk to a new shop when someone else has touched something before they have - in my case the crank bolt was removed/replaced when my timing tensioner job was completed.
After I made the cracking discovery, I saw another person on the F type forums running a VAP pulley experienced noise that was root caused to a cracked pulley and loads of noise from it. It was just impossible to visually inspect this when caked with road dirt/grime over the years. Only a deep clean revealed this. (https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...r-help-268268/)

Good find on that other thread. It has a short video that might be useful to watch. He did contact VAP and they did send him another pulley.
Yes that damper bolt is a weird setup with Jaguar using two different bolts and then making them opposite threaded! I hope to stay away from taking that apart.
