Default engine ticking noise on tickover

Hi I recently changed my XJS and bought a XK8 1998...The car has a ticking noise which goes when you rev it and returns once it comes back to tickover? Is this a noisy cam follower and can this be adjusted. It doesnt have a rattle from the timing chain tensioners, when you start the car from cold so i am guessing its not a noise from them.
Any help or advise appreciated..

It's possible that it's Normal Injector noise that would only be noticeable at Idle. However it could be a noise that is caused by Tensioners. Best to pull the Cam Covers and check for latest style Tensioners. Although my XKR does not use VVT, It may be noise associated with a malfunctioning VVT unit.

It can also be an idler pulley.

The usual recommended test is to remove the belt temporarily. If the noise goes away, it is one of the elements driven by the belt. You can then push, pull, rotate, etc. the different elements by hand to figure out which one ... while the engine is off.

Hi Gus. Sorry i seem to have confused everyone..the ticking is more of a tapping from the mid to front of the engine, sounds a bit like a tick to me! Dissapears as soon as you rev it and the oil pressure increases, then comes back at idle..and no squeals. Guess i will have to take the cam covers off to have a look.. for peace of mind..Thanks...Another question how do you show your car on your thread?

Prior to pulling things apart you need to get a stethoscope Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more and see if you can pinpoint the noise. What is the oil viscosity you are using? The cams have an adjustment but it is not like the old days. As for inserting a photo go to your control panel and select and select avatar.

Thanks Gus.
In the 1970s i worked with a old mechanic who would use a short piece of wood to identify noises in engines..He would put his ear to the end of the shaft and the other end on various parts..Funny but he generally found the source of the noise..The oil in the car is unknow to me as i have only owned it 3 weeks and 2 weeks of that were spent at the auto transmission specialist.."The usual "... The oil is very clean and if anything looks very thick or high in Viscosity..139000 miles on the clock with mostly Jaguar main dealer services..Can the cams be adjusted using feeler guage or are they hydrolic or something?
Avatar sorted..Cheers Gus.

The valve adjustment on this car is not like the old days. A feeler gauge does not work.
