Audio Comparison - Surround vs. Reference
Looking for any real world comparisons between the Meridian Surround 825 watts with 20 speakers vs. The Meridian Reference 1300 watts with 26 speakers. From reading the sales catalog it seems like the biggest difference is for the rear seat passengers. Anyone have experience with both?
"The latest addition to the range is the incredible 1300-watt Meridian Reference Audio System available only on the long wheelbase models. This ultra premium sound system employs 6 extra speakers in the front seat backs localizing the sound for each passenger, which provide an authentic and consistent sound quality for all while enhancing the sense of space within the cabin. With an XJ Meridian Audio System everyone can hear the difference."
Thanks

I did the recommended speaker upgrade a few months ago, along with sound deadening on the door sheet metal. After doing one door completely I used my phone to fade back and forth instantly between the left and right channel, so I could A/B the change, and the difference between the two was really minimal to my ears. It sounded slightly better, but for the $500 I spent on the new speakers I wouldn't recommend it. The sound deadening is probably worth it though.
The biggest improvement I got was fading everything to the front in the EQ, so it would stop trying to play vocals and stuff from the crappy speakers behind the seats. That was actually a pretty significant improvement. I still need to do some felt tape in the back panels to cut down on all the rattling there though.

I did about the same thing as FtypeATX on my 2014 XJR. I did find that the reference Kevlar drivers sounded better. I replaced all 4 woofers in the doors plus the two subs in the rear deck. Along with a good bit of sound damping pads in all 4 doors. Plus more pads installed behind the rear seat and on the rear deck and then used what I had left on the trunk. Left the tweeters in the door and dash area's alone.
Yes the reference system's biggest change/improvement is providing sound to the rear seat passengers using those speakers mounted in the backs of the front seats.
