Push the small button on the left side of the remote to open the lid like a clamshell. Then the larger piece of plastic on the left side next to the button slides out and contains the battery

Would you happen to have the URL to a 2004 XJ8? I'm really struggling with the remote key battery replacement... I split the unit in two, but can not find the 'mentioned' screw to free the PCB...

Here's the relevant page from the 2004 Driver's Handbook:

Item C should be the screw you are looking for.

Thanks GGG... This diagram is nice and concise... My problem was on step "B"... I found the slot req'd a 0.5mm tip screwdriver. Most notworthy is the fact that the screwdriver should be leveraged down (as shown in "B")... Twisting the screwdriver chewed up the opening slot a little on my first attempt... Live & learn... a picture IS worth a thousand words all right... Thx Kyd

Yes it's tricky! I just changed the battery myself. Step (A) should be at a 30-deg angle and a gentle push forward. Step (B) should be 90-deg, push the screwdriver straight down with force until you feel a pop, only then do you angle it down as indicated in the diagram to separate the clamshell.
