does anyone know how to remove this piece?
Don't know but you can logon to Home | TOPIx and buy an hour and download the appropriate section in the workshop manual.
My first thought was that it's integral to the body, but looking at pictures of the body-in-white, it appears it attaches to the body later, already pre-painted black. If you can't find it in the technical manual, I'd suggest pulling the C-Pillar trim and see if there's some nuts that hold it on.
On a side note, looking closely at my XJL, that trim peice is non-metallic gloss black, as opposed to the rest of the car which is metallic black. Fortunately it's hard to tell unless you look close.

tried to tug on it but I don't want to crack it.
I am painting these to match to car as we speak. Mercedes S class with pano has the entire line from windshield to trunk above the windows coded to car. It looks far better to have this line continuous. I will black out the center. This is the only thing about the 351 that really bugs me as well as the chrome window trim.
On dark cars its not so glaring but on my white car, the "U" shaped body color accent really bothers me.
It will be easily fixed by painting the previously noted area the body color and painting the center roof gloss black.
This is how the XJ roof area should look...

The Parts Catalogue drawing gives a hint on how it's attached:

Looks like it's secured on four 'tabs' (arrowed in red) at the top and a channel (arrowed in blue) on the bottom. I'd expect it has to be popped off the bottom channel before it can be moved upwards to clear the tabs.
You need wide masking tape on the surrounding bodywork as it will be very easy to scratch the paint!

GGG I think you are showing the "chrome" trim and not the panel. I know the panel is plastic and supposed to pop off as I was told that back in 2012 when I first was going to buy a XJ and the dealer had this car on the floor that they had done. I finally decided to go with Mr. Callum's schema.
Someone actually did that on a white car. Thanks for those pics.
That looks 100% better, I love it, although it puzzles me that after doing all that work, they failed to address the chrome trim. I will have it done right, just wait!
My car will be out of the body shop Wednesday, I will post pics of the result.
Is that a members car? It looks unsold at a dealer?!? Must have been a trade in as I doubt a dealer would be savvy enough to have that mod done as it wouldn't make them any value added money. But wait, would they have a used car inside? Hmm.
Did you decide to take pics of it because you immediately noticed the mod? Good catch!

It was a spec car by Nalley Jaguar in Alpharetta GA, but they have since given up the franchise to Hennessey that now operates all 3 Atlanta area JLR dealerships and was new as they had done several for earlier purchasers. I think that they had added $1500 to 2k on the sticker. Also, notice that they painted the body colored roof section a gloss black to blend into the "black" glass top look

I think the white painted C-Pillars look way better which is why I had mine painted. But in my opinion painting the roof black is no different than having the black C-Pillars in the first place. Looks like a parlor trick which the C-Pillars are which is part of the reason so many people dislike them. But again thats my opinion.
Read again. I said parlor trick.
parlor trick is a reference to a magic trick or slight of hand trick performed in a home (i.e., in the parlor of a home), usually by a guest or family member for the entertainment of other guests or family members, such as after dinner. It dates well back in time to before television. Today, it is often used in reference to simple tricks (as opposed to professional magician's acts) capable of being performed by amateurs, i.e., in the phrase "a simple parlor trick" to denegrate the sophistication of someone's apparent ability to do something not obviously possible.
This is off the website Jalopnik: Regardless of which paint color you choose, the XJ's C-pillars are painted black; Ian Callum, the car's designer, claims that the black paint provides an elegant, unbroken collar underneath the car's roof.
So what they did is as an optical illusion so at a distance you get that effect. Up close not at all. To me blacking out the roof is the exact same optical illusion that Jaguar failed to achieve with the black c-pillars. When you get a panoramic roof on a Mercedes the entire roof is glass. That is the correct way to do it. I think the pillars should either be glass if they what they want the effect to be or it should be the color of the rest of the pillar which is why I painted my c-pillars car color.
But again thats just my opinion.
