Drivers door open error troubleshooting and fix
2016 XJL - US spec
I've had the driver's door open error for a while. I tried fixing it by replacing the door latch, which didn't change the situation. Eventually found it to be a broken wire in the door harness. It was broken in the rubber conduit between the door and the body.
Some recommendations for anyone else facing this issue (apologies for the lack of photos).
Troubleshooting the latch.
The door open/closed switch is pins 3 & 4 of the top connector into the latch mechanism. It can be seen by looking inside the door cavity towards the latch. The connector you are looking for faces forward from the latch mechanism, the other connector is at a 45 degree angle at the bottom of the latch. It is harder to get to and you don't need to touch this one. Remove the connector and check the latch by checking for continuity between pins 3 and 4 on the latch. These are the bottom two pins since 1&2 are blanks.
Trip the latch closed, you should get continuity between pins 3&4. Open circuit when the latch is open. If not, the latch may be the issue.
Check the wiring
The break I found was between Pin 3 of the latch plug and Pin 5 on the body connector. Checked for continuity and there was an open circuit between those two.
There are three connectors to the door in the driver's side kick panel (you'll need to remove the carpet and hood release). The body connector in the kick panel areas is the 22 pin flat grey and red connector. There are small markings on the back of the plug to indicator pin numbers.
Piggybacking a new wire between the latch plug and the body connector, and securing it to the existing harness to keep it out of the window regulator fixed the issue.
Hope this helps!
