CarBuzz/CarScoops has a good insight from a recently former JLR that Speth's vision of a "British BMW" poured precious monies into a dying concept..

I'll go on a limb and predict Jaguar/Tata will scrub this plan.
Within 24 months, it'll be obvious that the UK & US & Chinese grids simply aren't ready to replace 400 mile driving ranges with a 5 minute fillup of petrol/diesel.

I agree. Although I haven't made the trip in a few years, my wife and I used to make an annual vacation trip from western New York, to the beaches of South Carolina. The trip was just over 800 miles. One car that we owned in the 90s, was a Chevrolet Caprice LTZ. This car had a fuel injected 350 engine, backed by an automatic transmission with overdrive. Surprisingly, the car would provide, at cruising speed, 25 MPG. Combined with a 25 gallon fuel tank, that gave us a cruising range of a hair over 600 miles. Therefore, if we chose to "push it" a little, we'd only have to make one "5 minute fill up of petrol/diesel", as you phrased it.Originally Posted by F1Virginia

Out of curiosity, I looked at the Tesla "route planner" that's online. It not only provided you with a relatively efficient route to get to your destination, it also maps the route to keep you near to their charging stations, and tells you when to make the charging stops. Plugging in (a little pun intended) my start point in NY, and my end point in SC, the vacation trip I used to make, the Tesla route took between 2 and 3 hours longer to make the trip, strictly due to stops for charging. Furthermore, at my destination point, there were only 4-5 charging stations, and 3 of them were located at hotels, and use was restricted to guests of those hotels. That left 2 charging stations for general usage, at a busy tourist location!
Furthermore, consider this.....The trip I'm using as an example, was a 13.5-14 hour drive, including a couple of relatively short "pit stops" for food, gasoline, and rest room visits. It's a long trip, indeed, but one that is "doable" in one fell swoop. But add the 2-3 hours of "charging time", time that you HAVE to spend, and now you're into the 16-17 hour range. And I feel that it would take you out of the "drive straight through" category. So now you're faced with adding the portion of another day, in drive time, as well as a hotel bill, on top of it. This is efficient?
Just like the song says! I would’ve embraced an EV XJ! (Even to buy NEW!) But NO THANK YOU to idiotic EV SUVs no matter WHAT BRAND! Idiotic urban EV 4x4s are as stupid as the drivers and buyers! EV SUV 4x2s are just ‘station wagons’!!! (In the words of ‘click & clack’ the tappet brothers, John and Ray Magliozzi: “4 x 2” it’s what auto makers use that sounds much better than ‘nothing special’!”
Audi looks like they have a sexy four-door EV sedan for those of us that aren’t stupid enough to think that we need mountaineering capability for driving on what they call, “roads”!
And I think I’ve owned a half dozen Jaguars in my lifetime!!

This all assumes that you aren't using the A/C, that there are no lines at these charging stations, and that all of the chargers are operating. I live in DC and have to make occasional weekend trips to Chicago for business. I can't risk that 10-hour drive turning into an overnighter. If & when EV's can go 300+ miles on a single charge and refill from empty to full in less than 10 minutes, they'll be tempting. IMO, the best thing about the new XJ-it was going to be offered in all powertrains eventually. I think that would have allowed the brand to tack whichever way the wind blows. Jaguar makes beautiful cars that drive well. But they have a history of disappointing the people who love their cars the most with absurd business decisions. I'll admit that Bollore' (Carlos Ghosn subordinate) is in a tough spot. With Euro-Ministers breathing the clean air of more electric/less combustion, the days of long, low hoodlines and feral growls are indeed waning.
After Speth's enthusiastic pursuit of the Deutsche Gros Drei for 10 years, and Covid, and carbon taxes, it's surprising that Tata would even consider the $5 billion purported necessary investment.
Despite all of us being Jag enthusiasts, we ourselves would surely question the value of buying a $125k EV Jaguar..
So, just imagine the difficulty in bringing non-Jag-Fans into this niche to help pay back the ROI on that $5bill.
When I considered the "2020 XJ" as an electric only, it made far less sense than simply buying a 100k Warranted CPO 2019 XJ.

Even LUCID offering sedans TK matching Jaguar’s current pricing up to $170K; yet tax incentives reduce it to current comparable Jaguar pricing yet still! (With up to 1000+ hp & 500+ mi range & professing 20 min/300 mi charging.)
If those here who consider yourself Jaguar enthusiasts and believe losing an EV XJ Sedan is wrong let Jaguar know! Speak out!! Don’t be like idiotic U.S. citizens who hotly debate America's political future online then sit on their *** and NOT EVEN VOTE! Jaguar is already sick and tired of hearing from me. And frankly-in the opinion of some of JLR's recently departed, high-profile people(we all know who they are)-Tata has hired Bollore to oversee the demise of Jaguar. These people are just as upset as the rest of us. Additionally, none of them believes that Gerry McGovern is the man to design Jaguars of the future.
