Gear box and hand brake failure
Hi,
first of all: please excuse if any technical parts will be named wrong by me, English is not my first language. Thanks.
This morning, while driving my 2011 X351 on the motor way at medium speed, the display started showing two warning messages. One stated the gear box as malfunctioning , the other one did the same for the hand brake.
I stopped the car in a parking lot, but could not turn the gear shifter knob so I turned off the engine. The gear shifter knob did not lower itself and could not be turned with engines off as well. So I restarted the engine and the knob turned back to normal operation, warning messages were gone. Everything worked as normal during the rest of the drive.
Having arrived at work I tried to park and, while shifting to rear, the two messages appeared again. I had to "reboot" again to complete parking because the reverse gear could not be engaged otherwise.
After some hours, on my way back from work, no more messages appeared and everything was fine, including shifting to rear and the raising and lowering of the gear shifter knob.
Did anyone encounter these symptoms and knows the cause (or a possible cause)?
How are the gear box and parking brake interconnected at all?
Best Regards
Thomas

Thomas -
Your use of English is excellent, and your post was very clear and understandable. I suspect the lack of responses to your post is simply due to the fact that others have not experienced the same problem.
Hopefully, someone will be able to help you in the near future.

Thank you for your kind words, John.
Meanwhile the car has been diagnosed by a JLR dealer. The problem is with the module containing the gear shifter knob, the hand brake switch and some other switches (winter mode etc.). The german description of that part might translate to "gear control module", although I am not sure if it is really called like that in English.
The module has not been exchanged by now, the problem did not emerge again after that one tour described above. Maybe it has just been a temporary communication problem between modules...?
I hope this is helpful for someone having the same symptoms in future.

The problem reappeared after nearly two weeks now. This time it happened while pulling a bottle out of the bottle holder close to the switch module. This makes me think that it might just be a slack joint. I would like to check that myself before giving it to repair - which is priced around €700. Only a small percentage of that estimation is working time, so it should be easy to access the module.
Does anyone have instructions on how to remove that unit? In this post H20boy described how to remove the panel surrounding the screen. I assume the surrounding panel containing the switch unit and the bottle holders can be removed the same way, by using a hook tool to pull it out of its position. Is it like that?
