Decided to randomly check my oil level, and once again its low.

I know how to measure the oil. my question is more about if the oil level measuring system is in real time? meaning, once i warm up the engine, turn it off, wait a few minutes, and check the oil....will it accurately measure when I add more oil? or do I need to do the whole drive cycle again every time I add a bit of oil?

 

carz, if you want to see your instantaneous oil level, you simply need to do the following:
-park on a level surface (the system may vary up to 0.5L with as little as a half degree of tilt front to rear).
-put the car in the ON (engine not running) condition
-Open the hood of your car
-scroll through the right controls to attempt to look at the oil level (will give you an error that you probably can't see it now unless you meet all the requirements for normal viewing)
-press the CANCEL button for the cruise control twice in a 2 second period (your right indication will return to a normal view during this process)
-Scroll back to view the oil level.

You will now see the live oil level and as you add/remove oil, you should see the oil level change.

 

What a palaver - and all because Jaguar deleted to good old dipstick to measure engine oil level! I can't fathom why they did this - why change a perfectly functional and proven over the years direct measurement of the oil level with an electronic device which will inevitably eventually fail?

CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL

The engine oil level is not monitored when the engine is running and/or the vehicle is in motion.

Check the engine oil weekly. If any significant or sudden drop in oil level is noted, seek qualified assistance.

A certain amount of oil consumption is normal. The rate of consumption will depend on the following:

• The quality and viscosity of the oil.

• Climatic conditions.

• The speed at which the engine is being

operated.

• Road conditions.

Drivers should expect above normal consumption when the engine is new, and after breaking-in if high speeds are sustained.

Prior to checking the oil level ensure that:

• The vehicle is on level ground.

• The engine oil has reached working

temperature (oil is hot).

• The engine has been switched off for 10

minutes, as the system will not give an accurate reading until the oil level has stabilized.

The oil level can then be checked as follows:

1. Switch on the ignition (do not start the engine).

2. Ensure Park (P) is selected.

3. Select the Service menu using the instrument panel menu control, see 63, INSTRUMENT PANEL MENU.

Select Oil level display from the Service menu. The current oil level status and topping-up advice is displayed in the instrument panel, top-up as instructed.

Fluid level checks

An indication of the oil level is displayed in the gauge. Messages to the right of the gauge advise you of any action you may need to take.

If the oil level is within the required operating range, the message Engine Oil Level OK will be displayed. Do not add any additional oil to the engine.

If the oil level is below the required operating range, a message advising you how much oil to add will be displayed (e.g. Add 0.5 Quart or Add 0.5 Liter). Add the recommended quantity of oil.

If the message Engine Oil Level Overfilled is displayed, seek qualified assistance immediately. Do not drive the vehicle as this will cause serious damage to the engine.

If the message Engine Oil Level Underfilled is displayed, add 2.6 pints (1.5 liters) of oil, then recheck the level.

If the message Engine Oil Level Not Available is displayed, the oil level is stabilising. Switch off the ignition, wait 10 minutes, then recheck the oil level display.

If the warning message ENGINE OIL LEVEL MONITOR SYSTEM FAULT is displayed, seek qualified assistance.

thanks guys, what is the maximum oil capacity?

 

carz, I find on an oil change, if I put in 8 quarts of oil, it takes my indication right up to the max fill line. The manual says that the max amount is 7.5 quarts. So, take that for what it is worth.

 

interesting, thanks! they filled it 7 qts, and one of the documents i read said 7 quarts (for the AWD model). im going to need to do a better job keeping an eye on it

 

carz, keep in mind that the AWD XJ's have the 3.0L supercharged V6. So, yes, it is likely that the V6 will take slightly less oil than the V8 (5.0L, which is what I was quoting).

 

As with many things, the answer is in your owner's manual

 

I suggest checking the oil level when the engine is cold. The oil expands some when warm.

 

Cars, the quantity is in your user manual. Whatever it says, less 1/2 quart. Why less? Because there is always residual left behind, and you can always add, but a little more time consuming to remove! We all know, too much oil is not good at all, for any motor!
