info on 2011 & 2012 xj
I just sold my Dodge SRT-10. Need something that my bride can get in with a little less 8.4 L engine noise.
My question. I am looking at a 2011 or 2012 XJL. Would like to know the straight skinny on the quality of the two years and repairs on the 385 hp vs. the 470 beast.
Sold my truck but still need a power car.
Any suggestions would be of great help.
Thanks

I would say stay away from those early years, they are cheap for a reason. Get a 2014+ with the S/C V8 only, it is IMO the only engine to get for these cars, and after 2013 there were a lot of improvements to the vehicle, including more durable parts for common failure points. The 470 can be tuned to 650hp no problem. I have an XJR-L and would not have any other version of the car, honestly.
Small world! I sold my 850hp SC SRT10 last year because the wife couldn’t drive it. I picked up a 2012 XJ SC a couple months back and already upgraded to 600hp and my wife loves it. As stated, some issues on the older ones but cheaper and just needed some work.
Funny story. My truck was built at JTSVP. Guy who works there bought my truck. I saw it the other day when I stopped by there to dyno the Jag. Probably the first and last Jag Tony had on it.

Such a small world. I too am wanting the power and limited on budget. Do you know any real difference in the 2011 and the 2012. Most of the ones I have found are that are supercharged are the 2011. At 75 yrs old, this is probably my last fling. But---I do not need a huge bill just to keep it running (fast).
Thanks for the come back.

This question appears like clockwork almost every month. Fortunately, most users of this forum title their posts accurately, not simply "Help!" in the subject field.
This makes it easy to scroll backwards to find similar questions. Here are two recent ones:

There's probably one such question on every page of this forum.

No reason to stay away from the early years. With proper maintenance and oil changes every 5k (not the factory recommended 10k) they can go a long time. Mine has 146k on the clock. 2012 5.0 SC. I will say that I did replace my valve chain guides as a precaution as that is a week point. Some special tools but not the worst job I have done.
In a few years the 2014's will be down in this price range as well. That's just what happens with these cars over time. Its a natural progression with these cars.
The only reason to get a 13+ would be if you wanted the 8 speed real bad for some reason. If you get into the newer ones they do have some updates but man they aren't worth the money in my eyes. Your call

I drove the 8-speed, and didn't like it. Even six is one too many (with the V8 and its buckets of torque), IMO. But the MY13+ get much better electrics, particularly the infotainment system. But, but, they also have the start-stop system, which was reason enough for me to DQ them.
Given the frequency of this question, perhaps a sticky would be appropriate.
ps Early vs. late is a lot like SWB vs. LWB. Everybody has a favorite, and plenty of reasons why.

Listen to the above. These cars are worth very little at this time. Get the latest model you can.
The later cars have far less electrical and battery problems plus the 8 speed gets you more performance AND more gas mileage.
At 75 I am not going to ask you if you can DIY any repairs so be ready for some expensive repair bills at the dealer. Maybe you can find a non-dealer repair place but Jaguars are not real well known so that's tough to do also.
