I have a '10 XJL and my instrument cluster is plagued with dots, so the sharpness is severely reduced. I'm thinking about replacing it with an used cluster bought off ebay.
For all other cars I've done this to, it's a simple plug and play, everything will work except for the ODO.
Do you guys have any experience with this? Any issue/problem that I should know beforehand? TIA.
Mycroft, I would make sure I have a copy of SDD standing by. I know the older models, they threw part of the security system into the instrument cluster which would prevent you from being able to start the car if you changed it out without proper programming. Not sure if this is part of the design of this model XJ. This is something that is normally kept fairly hush hush because they don't want people figuring out ways around the security system for obvious reasons.
I would think VERY long and hard before I did this!
Thermo is pointing you in the right direction. I would investigate getting a used panel and try to swap over the screen only.
Too much security stuff buried in the circuit boards of the IP.
It's really easy to remove the IP which surprised me so maybe take a look at how it comes apart? I don't know if you can split the case or if it's all melted together?
Here is the IP with the trim panel removed.
At this point it's only 4 screws/bolts to remove the IP.
When the IP is out you can still attach the wire harness so at least you could make changes and then check them out without putting everything back together.
You can see the leaper in the above picture when I powered the car up this way.
Sorry I did not go any deeper than this since I was working on installing the larger Android screen in the center stack.
