Just warn youngsters that ball point pins and chewing or bubble gum, and sharp objects are simply not permitted, and that if they scuff seats or seat backs with their shoes, that you will crush their little feet in a vise.

Also beware of females (or transvestites) that use "tanning lotions" on their bare legs, or who try and use make-up (lipstick, mascara, eye shadow, etc.) while in the car.

Also beware of blue denim pants, especially if they get wet as in the rain; and also for decorative "bling" sown on the rear pockets of their "jeans"; simply insist the wearers get naked, change into other clothes before getting in your Jag, or find another way home (including your wife, children, relatives, and best friends).
While I'm 100% confident that I'm perfectly ok not having "transversite" in the back seat ( or in the front, for what that matters ), I couldnt help myself in laughing quite hard with your ideas.

To the extent that three people knocked on my office asking if everything is ok.

Dear Sir, your suggestions are now printed and will live on the glovebox of my Jaguar XJ - will be shown and presented as "John Dahlheimer Mandaments to happy Jaguar ride" with a very small print that I added : "how can I give you a lift and dont break your kneecaps".

However, few updates :

- I bought the XJ
- It will be the family car
- it will get stains, cookies eventually will be eaten and, God forbid, liquids will splash.

Its my baby, its my small trophy achievement, but then again, I always bought expensive stuff - to wear, to use. Not to baby.

Thank you all for your inputs !

Whether to eat and/or drink in my XJL is not a matter of whether I consider the car to be a "trophy" or not; it just is not allowed, plain and simple. The same goes for my Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn 4x4 pickup and my Ford Mustang convertible. I like my vehicles CLEAN and ODOR-FREE. They could all three be cup holder free and it wouldn't bother me a bit.

Do any XJ models have folding rear seats? How do you transport skis etc? I have a SC XF which is often used at the weekend with the kids. I had thought when I change it I'd prob move up to an XJ. But no split-fold on seats would make weekend ski trips v hard...

Goncalo, nice choice on vehicle! You'll love your XJ as a family car. My wife and I both us our cars as "family vehicles" and my XJ has been GREAT in terms of being able to transport people and things.

One recommendation: make sure you gat an XJL. You will thank me later. The extra leg room let me sit where I was comfortable without having to move my seat up with the car seat behind it. Now that the youngest is forward facing, my seat is still far away enough from his legs to keep if from getting kicked.

Another nice thing you'll notice - sometimes if you have to take slightly longer trips, your kid may get tired. We make a "cocoon" in the back by closing the side window shades, rear sunroof shade, and rear window shade. Makes it pretty dark in the back and it's very easy for the kids to fall asleep. Plus the car is very quiet and comfortable as it is.

Interior has held up great as long as you do your due diligence and care for it. The trunk has plenty of space for bags, stroller, portable crib, etc, all at the same time. I just hope you're good at Tetris!

Congrats on your growing family, and make sure you let a long wheelbase model!

BritCars, if you need to transport skis, you would probably end up getting some sort of roof rack to mount the skis too. I want to say that there are little pull outs that are meant to have you lock a rack system into on the roof. Maybe I am thinking of my X-Type (I know it had them). I know I would use the folding seat function myself. Should have seen me transporting 10 foot long pieces of PVC piping in the XJ.

Sounds like a 1967 station wagon is more appropriate than an XJL. It has plenty of room for hauling stuff, roof rack, and the kids.

I'm very happy with the XF right now which has split folding seats and works very well for eg ski trips and for my family with 3 kids. There is no shortage of cabin space

But as mentioned I always imagined I'd move to XJ when I change in the next couple of years. So I looked at some reviews of the car as I was amazed rear seat can't fold flat. What I read says that the normal XJ/XJL can fold flat. But there is an option for 2 'armchairs' instead of the 'bench' and it doesn't fold with the 'armchairs'. Is that right? And if so does that mean there are XJ and XJL modes that have foldable seats. Or does everyone get the armchair option?
