Question Jaguar XJ problems

Purchased an 2010 XJ Premium Luxury from a car dealer, very next day the problems start:

Burst of random white smoke when I put my foot down, weird smell. Don't know what the problem is, no warning lights, no loss of power. Car has only done 50k mileage.

Rattle near passenger glove box when car gear selected changed to reverse

Steering wheel vibrate when I brake

Booked into jaguar later this week

White smoke and weird smell could indicate engine coolant leaking into cylinders; not a good thing.

Blown head gasket probable on the smoke,, Bad rings on the pistons possible but not probable

Badly warped rotors for the vibration.

Sounds like previous owner was a hoodrat that worked the car like a rented mule

you need to put your foot up someone's a**

Welcome to the forum BigLux,

Sorry to hear about the issues with your XJ. How you proceed with this depends on whether it was purchased from a franchised Jaguar dealer or an independent and any warranty included in the deal.

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Thankfully i purchased from a well respected independent dealer, they've agreed to cover the expenses.

With regards to the turbo, jaguar said one of the Turbo needs replacing.

With regards to the rattle, it was a loose pipe which was not fastened when the DPF was changed.

Yet to diagnose the steering wheel vibration when braking, hopefully its just needs discs replacing.

Still shocked to find so many problems, just unlucky i guess. Problems showed on the day of purchase.

Good to hear the major issues are covered.

If the vehicle had been standing for a while before purchase, the vibration could be as simple as a sticking brake caliper.

Default XJ powered seat functions confusing and difficult to use

My key issue is that it is unclear what the seat functions are / how they are operated and that the buttons are hard to use. Does anyone else find the same thing?

See the thread "What would you change in your XJ?, where you asked about the same issue. The Seat control in today's cars certainly go way beyond the "six-way" power seats of past decades.

Hello BigLux,

Curious to learn more about what ended up happening with the white smoke issue and how that whole situation panned out for you then and now.

I'm asking because I just bought a 2011 XJL with 35K miles on the clock and yesterday an ENORMOUS white cloud of smoke came pouring out of the exhaust (mostly on the right pipe).

My car just got into the dealership today so am awaiting the news any day now.

But I have seen a blown head gasket before (on my old 91 range rover) and if I were a betting man I'd say I just experienced a blown head gasket at 35K miles on a car that cost nearly 100K brand new.

Not the best experience so far!

So here's my question... Did it turn out to be a blown head gasket in your case? Were the heads inspected for warping? Did you get new heads? Any other interesting details to share to someone who is experiencing something similar?

And most importantly... Since you had the repair done how reliable has the car been since and has the white smoke issue happened to you since?

Obviously a blown head gasket can be a real problem so I am now trying to decide if I should even keep this car now in case other damage has happened somewhere else in the power train (the trickle down effect)...

Thanks for your time!

The problem turned out to be a faulty turbo, Jaguar changed this 2/3 times as they couldn’t get it right the first time, in total the car spent 1 month in a jaguar workshop. After the lengthy repair, the white smoke stopped.

With regards to the wrapping, i had all the pads and discs changed, the vibration reduced significantly, but it was still there at times when braking.

With regards to post turbo change, the car had been very troublesome, with oil smells in the cabin and frequent "loss of power" engine lights which put me into limp mode, i got to a point where i couldnt deal with these issues, they just kept building up, so after a lengthy negotiation, the dealer took the car back.

My XJ was a liability more than anything.

Just to jump in, although on the surface they sound like simualar problems, it looks like Biglux had the Turbo diesel version where Quartzboy has the SC petrol so undoubtedly there will be little direct comparison in the two issues (other than shoddy Jaguar workmanship)
