lower control arm
I’m hearing a clunking noise from the passenger side front wheel whenever I drive over speed bumps or rough roads. I had it inspected, and the mechanic said the issue is likely the lower control arm on that side.
Before I schedule the repair, I wanted to ask should I replace both lower control arms (driver and passenger sides) at the same time, or is it fine to just replace the one that’s worn out for now?

Front lower control arms, so called banana arms, does not be very expensive and very easy and fast to replace, so i always have been replaced them as a pair.
You need 4-wheel aligment after change.

when you say not very expensive do you mean OEM or aftermarket? Did you replace them yourself ? Do you need special tools?

OEM is made by Lemförder (part of ZF) and these are well available from various part shops. Yes. Been changed them many times on mine. (i have more than 200t Miles on odo and occosionally track use eats them) No special tools needed. Need to remove wheel and engine undercover. If i remember right: 15mm and 14mm socket for outer and 18mm and 20mm for inner bolts. Inner one have an adjust. Mark the location before removing, but still worth to have 4-wheel adjustment afterwards.

Can you confirm if the control arms differ between AWD and RWD models? Can we replace just the ball joint rather than the entire control arm? What’s the trade-off? Is there a specific advantage to installing a full control arm assembly when only the ball joint has failed?

[QUOTE=JaguarXJL15;2878092]It isn't just the ball joint that wears, the bushings that the arm pivots on, also wear out.
Rarely the ball joint. Those banana arms have fluid filled bushings and are directional too.
I would just think of them as a normal wear item as Vasara posted. Thankfully they are available and at decent prices.
When you get the part number always check with Jaguar using the last 6 digits of your VIN. Everything is done by the VIN as many running changes were made.
Can you post what the part number is to help the next guy?

[QUOTE=JaguarXJL15;2878092]I'm just "spitballin" here, but if I recall correctly, the arms are cast aluminum. If so, it's a distinct possibility that you could deform the arm's ID where the b/j resides, if you don't press the b/j in squarely. In that case, you'd have a b/j that doesn't fit snugly, which will be an issue, big time. AND you'll have wasted your money on just the b/j, when you have to buy an a-arm with a b/j installed, to replace the deformed a-arm........
I am afraid you wasted your money. Inner bushes wear approx 70-90t miles and new OEM ones cost about 150USD directly from ZF channel.. (most autopart shops)
High change is that 2nd hand ones have already inner bushes weared out. -> Inner bushes have small fluid chambers and these chambers start to leak ech other making it soft. Cant see it outside.
Thet are easy and fast to change, but need 4-whee aligment after change.
