I literally just created this account and have begun the search for trying to pinpoint the source of my leak, but in the meantime I wanted to create describing my issue to see if anyone has experienced anything similar.
I was driving my wife’s XJL last week and noticed the smell of a coolant leak, but it was faint.
Yesterday I was doing some spirited driving in and noticed steam coming from under the hood. I opened the hood and noticed that the steam was coming from the oil filter housing area. But no visible trail or pooling was present.
I got home yesterday evening and had the low coolant light on, topped the system off and noticed a steady drip coming off the aero pans where the transmission sits.
Could I have multiple hoses that decided to let go at the same time? Or would a leak at the thermostat area travel that far back?
thanks in advance for any tips!

Reason: Expand the thread title
Try checking again after it's sat overnight and everything is cool and dry. When coolant dries it'll usually leave a white outline which makes it much easier to see than when it's wet. You're going to need to pull the belly pan off and really give it a thorough check. An inspection mirror will help a lot. If it's just sort of all over the place, you can wipe it off with a damp cloth and then check again after another drive.
I had to take a drive today, and I have coolant all over the pulleys., and collected in the belly pan under them. I feel it's safe to assume the water pump is shot.
If you don't know when it was last done, it's due anyway Actually, the same applies to all of the plastic coolant hoses too, which could also be the culprit.
This thread is a good reference for both, if needed:
Please post the engine and mileage and year?
There are a number of things that need to be done and the water pump is just the beginning.
I would stop driving the car now until it's been repaired.
Now the big question is will you DIY the repairs or pay to have the work done? If paying expect a large multi-thousand dollar bill.
It's all documented here on the forum if you do go the DIY route.
That's a good thread posted above to start with but we have many more too. Don't forget the rear water manifold as it's much easier to get to with the SC removed.

2016 3.0 57k & some change
Working through a bunch of threads now tracking down all the parts... I'm a glutton for punishment
Haven't found the part # for the rear water manifold yet
If your serious we now have several of the failure prone parts come out in lifetime Aluminum!
This is a great thing and I hope they continue and add more Al. parts!
So the 2 big ones in front of the engine. Note these are only for the SC cars as the NA ones use a different pipe. Al. Cooling Pipes
Also the tube from the water pump to the oil cooler. This is a bit hard to get stabbed when putting the engine back together and has caused leaks. This appears to fit ALL engines too. 2.0,3.0 and 5.0L versions. Al. Water Tube

apparently a common problem with these cars. Really have to keep an eye on them. What engine do you have and your mileage on car?
