Default oil weight 5W-30 royal purple performance

has anyone ever run this oil thru their XJR or XJ for that matter ? I have several friends who just swear by it. wondering if that would stray to far from manufacturer specs. interested to hear what all you guys are running and if you have noticed much sludge or metal shavings in your oil changes assuming you do it yourself. thanks

Do your friends have Jaguars?
If not why would their opinions matter?

If your interested again and again do some searches? We have dozens if not hundreds of threads on oil?
You do know that's the wrong weight and Jaguar has changed to 0W-20 several years ago?
See the attached Jaguar bulletin for the details.

I use Mobil 1 oil with the correct weight that meets Jaguar's specifications. Many use other products.

I would use the Castrol product but have had a terrible time getting the correct product as there are a number of Castrol Edge products out there and most of them DON'T meet the Jaguar spec. For a time the only place you could find it was at the dealer too.

Oh boy, another oil thread. lol...

Just go to bobistheoilguy.com if you want to dive into the beat-to-death excessive minutiae of something that can be easily summed up with this: If it's for sale on the shelf and is of the correct weight, AND you change it every 3k (if mineral) or 6k (if full synthetic), you'll be just fine. Personally, I get the cheapest full synth I can find, and that happens to be STP SYN 0-20 around these parts. Been running it in my XKR for about 60k miles over the past seven years (I'm at 101k now), and even with the pounding it takes and with the mods I have, there's never been an issue at all.

But by all means, get off in the weeds regarding factory specs and whathaveyou. Last thing- OEMs don't void warranties if you don't use their brand oil. Only that you use the correct weight and that it's for a four stroke gasoline engine. That oughtta tell you all you need to know.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Other than some friends recommending it the reason I bought 5/30 is bc I googled it in a jag forum and guys in XJ AND XJR ( https://www.jaguarforum.com/threads/...you-use.79634/) were running it on a forum that popped up and then some reputable store/place (can't recall had a package of 5/30 and filter. So I was like in a hurry and got it so I just wanted to check after the fact before I ran it to make sure. That’s the only reason. Not trying to start a huge debate. Sorry if I’ve inconvenienced anyone.

Consinder also this: Modern engines have plastic parts inside with direct contact of engine oil. About 2008-2010 regulations of plastics and rubber manufacturing set how much crude oil can be used for manufacturing and that part have been replaced by syntecthis. Outcome are that plastics and rubber parts do detoriate faster. Engine manufacturers choose the type of plastic/rubber used on engine parts, like chain guides, valve steams, inlet manifolds etc and work with oil manufacturer to match addictives used on engine oil to slow down harmfull process. (thats why there are different oils, even from same oil manufacturer, for different engine generations)
Good exsample (or bad) are oil bath timing belts, what can start to detoriate just with very small amout of wrong oil contamation with catastrofic failures.

that makes a TON of sense. Great post man. Solid facts to back up your opinion. I’m sold. Thank you. I won’t be running that then.

Your reference above is for 2003-2009 XJ and XJRs which have the 4.2L engines and not 2009-2019 cars with 5.0L and 3.0L engines.

Clubairth1 and all, FYI, I buy my spec Castrol Edge Professional 0w-20 from Atlantic British Ltd. 800-533-2210. It's a Land Rover outfit you can find on line. It's a little expensive but it's the right stuff if you're like me and insist on using the hard to find Castrol product with the JLR spec on the bottle. Here's the site. https://www.roverparts.com/search/castrol-oil-ow-20/
They also sell a complete kit with filter:

Thanks Freddy J. as that is my main complaint! Just hard to find the right Castrol oil. Plus almost $19 a quart!
