I bought a SC XJL, and it happened to come with the intelligent cruise control option that speeds or slows the car according to the distance to the car ahead of you.

I live in a fairly congested area, and I have to say this is an unexpectedly great feature. You can set your follow distance, like the Top Gear host said, from greater than four car lengths down to "the full Audi".

In heavy traffic, I set the cruise and let the cars ahead of me "tow" me to my destination. Though I continue to pay close attention to traffic, it just makes the drive more enjoyable. I love it, especially in a car that wants to go fast, like the XJ, I don't feel like I have to reign it in the whole time. Traditional cruise control doesn't usually work for me in heavier traffic.

The Jag intelligent cruise seems to work far better than Infiniti version I have seen on their M class and QX vehicles. (The BMW and Lexus cars I tested didn't have the option...and I wasn't looking for it....then.)

I'm definitely going to add this feature to my list of options for my next vehicle.

Had a loaded M45 on 24 month lease back in 06 and the laser based cruise control would disable every time I drove into the sun which so happened to be in the morning and the evening daily. Made it pointless.

 

Just be careful it won't bring the car to a full stop not like the Volvo XC60 laser system. I am over here in Germany and while the lowest gap it about a car length it is not Audi close. When I say they drive close over here its about zero reaction time.
