They are correct, you have to apply the parking brake. It's not automatic like the older versions.

Can't speak for a 2013, but on my 2017 XJ 5.0 putting it into P automatically sets the handbrake, and out of P releases it.

On my 2012 XJ, I have to manually set the parking brake. But, if I get into the car and take the gear shift out of P (Park), the car will automatically release the parking brake for me.

I wonder when they changed back to automatically applying the PB when the car is put in park?
My old 2005 S Type R did it automatically as did my 2003 Lincoln LS. But I did notice my 2014 XJR does not.

Seems like the EPB will be pretty much unused if you need to apply it manually?
