Default Problem w/opening moon roof

Has anyone ever encountered a situation where their moon roof motor presents a problem? My dealer says they can solve the problem but the cost is $5000. This is the first major issue I've experienced with my 2012 XJL portfolio edition that I've had for 12 yrs. Please help. Thanks.

Can you DIY the replacement? That might be your best choice?
Do you have the manual?

What is the problem exactly? What are the symptoms, I mean? Your description is a little vague. One of mine has a problem with retraction. It won't open but the motor turns and it's like a loud popping cracking plastic sound. And I know there is some gear pieces in there that need to be replaced. It's actually a not uncommon problem with these due to the plastic components. Though I'm not sure that's what's wrong with yours. If it is, it's a bit of a mess, but it is fixable DIY. I think there is even a single video where a guy completed this issue. That price quote sounds to me like it's a job they don't really want to do type of pricing. But they will for the right amount of money.

The nearest JLR dealer is in Harrisburg, is that where you're going? I'm surprised that they're even willing to work on your 14 year-old car. Perhaps that is reflected in the price quote.
Two Baltimore-area independent shops (staffed by former JLR mechanics) each quoted me $1200 - $1500 to repair a rattle in my roof. I won't get into the particulars, but it is necessary to remove the headliner to work on this problem. So it's not unreasonable that a problem requiring replacing actual components could cost another thousand.
Maybe just leave the darn thing closed, and remove the fuse? I've found that the glass roof closed provides the necessary ambiance. Having it fail while partially or fully open is an expense I wouldn't want.

This is a darn good line of reasoning. The older I get, the more I reflect on what is "good enough". How much do I really ever use them on my other vehicles? I mean, some but only because I can. Most of my vehicles don't even have it and I like your line of thinking here. I am the type that likes to have things all working, my time is becoming more considered. While I could for sure do this work myself, I have seen it done and it looks a bit like a pain, but I will take this same advice into consideration. Sorry to hijack the thread, just wanted to thank you for helping me personally see a good enough option.
