I bought a 2011 mini for carrying bikes etc. Came with the roof bars. It’s a blast to drive. The Mini and XJ are like chalk and cheese but both brilliant in their own ways.
You asked a fair question and did nothing wrong ... except for being brainwashed into believing that you did. Your guilty feeling is the curse of an overprotective mother.
I’ve used an Allen Premier S-102 2 Bike mount (trunk/boot) for the past year twice a week with transporting mine and wife’s road bikes with no problems. 20-100 miles each way to ride event. Use clean neoprene pads under rack pads that sit on trunk lid and make sure trunk area where pads will sit are clean so as not to scratch/mar paint. Also, take old inner tube and cut sleeves to go over metal fastener hooks for paint protection.
I would not recommend the “Deluxe” version as it is not as robust.
