Default Soft Close Doors ??

Hey Guys,

I'm wondering if anyone has this "problem" with their XJ. I'm the second owner of this car so I don't know if the system is running correctly but I think the soft close door feature is not working correctly. As I am able to still slam the door shut firmly I don't see how the soft close is actually working. In my mind the door should stop a centimeter away and pull it shut, which it doesn't do that. There isn't anything preventing the door from being slammed closed. To engage the system I have to slowly close the door. Not really a soft close door in my books, but to be honest I don't know if that's the intent. Perhaps it's a feature that makes sure the door is actually closed as aposed to a soft close door . Let me know what the case is. Thanks.

What year? Only 2014+ has that feature. Also, is it all doors or just the driver door? There’s a known issue where dealers failed to prep the cars during delivery and didn’t connect some wires to the fuse box to activate driver door.

soft close is only when you bring the door close and let the door close it the rest of the way...you close it until the latch initially engages, and it does the rest

slamming the door will do exactly that, I know of no car that will stop the door and soft close it if you slam the door

If you watch this video. My car doesn't do that. Like you said Chaos, you need to bring the door to the latch for it to do it the rest of the way. All four doors work the same way.

I just went out and tested my '17 XJ. If I "slam" any of the 4 doors, they simply catch once they meet the stop and are flush with the body panels. If I slowly close the door or "too lighlty" close the door, the "soft close" feature engages and "pulls" the door softly to the flush point.
Hope that helps.

I think the reason you are thinking this and having doubts about your car is because of the lucky/strategic push of the door from the person in the video. That wasn't a slam and it wasn't a "bring it to the latch" situation. It was basically a push that emulates the type of scenario that would kick the soft close feature into effect.

Jeez, I wish there really was something that stopped people slamming my doors, it's a pet hate of mine...but one of many!

My Mother in Law visited recently, and despite numerous warnings from both my wife and I, and having been 'educated' multiple times, slammed the passenger door so hard that I just lost it.

My wife stood aside while I ripped her disrespectful attitude and other things that shouldn't make it into print. The MiL went inside packed and left! My wife? She gave me a kiss and said "That went better than I thought, we've now got the weekend for ourselves"!

I got a letter of a somewhat muted apology a few days later.

Oh, we agreed that she is banned from all my cars

"Silence", is the key. The doors must still function normally, after a significant slam. The bonehead valets will slam away as soon as you're pit pf range of their shenanigan's. The objective here is closing the doors quietly, and by hand not slam. And be aware; if in the process of bringing the door slowly to its catch point, remember to remove those fingers from the side of the door, unlike this writer who's lost a fingernail by the soft closing door. It hurts!

It's not really a soft close door. It's a door that closes automatically only if you close it softly. I was expecting it to be more like soft close drawers where it dampens a slam.

Fair enough thanks for the feedback. I guess it's not a kitchen cabinet door lol.

That is how it is supposed to work. You bring the door close to closed and the car pulls it the rest of the way in. You have the option of a “soft close”, but the car lets you slam if you like.
