Has anyone installed an aftermarket remote start, or is it too complicated to be worth it? I don’t know why they waited until 2016 to add this key feature.

I was wondering the same. I am thinking about this for my 2017 XE as I just recently found out after much research and speaking with Jaguar Customer Service, AT&T customer service and T-Mobile that my car will never be able to access the internet for me to be able to use the Jaguar Mobile App to start my car. I can sign in to my iPhone hotspot and use CarPlay for everything else but need internet from the car telemetrics system to be able to use the remote start.
While expensive, it appears to be the only option I have found to get it to start using the FOB as all my other cars can do. I just can't find any reviews on their products.
Fortunately, my problem is fixed. Finally got Jaguar to activate my InControl Remote Premium and Protect services which I wasn't aware would work even without the car being able to access the internet. Works through the built in mobile phone technology that is built into the car. When they activated it the Call Button in the overhead console lit up and now stays lit. I can now remotely start my car, unlock/lock it and do the beep and flash as well as checking other systems on the car remotely. So, I don't care now that my SIM card has no internet connection as that seems to be only for the navigation and live apps which I don't care about as I have CarPlay for navigation.
I didn't do it through the dealership; did it through Jaguar Customer Service, Jaguar North America. They were the ones that eventually added the service to my car after getting my car added to my account. They activated the InControl Protect and InControl Remote Premium services with a two-week window. Yesterday I received the email telling me these services would expire soon and provided a link that I could click to renew. I followed the link and was able to renew both services for one year for $120.00 plus tax.
Here's what it looked like when they first activated and after I renewed.
One of the security features of the jags is the limited range of the fobs. Where you need to be nearly next to the car for it to work. So, what good is remote start if you have to be within 15’ of the car for it to work?
If you really want a useful remote start, consider one of the alarm systems from Viper or Drone that connects via cell phone app to access security stuff, and can remote start or disable your car.
Oh yeah, I know a little about this. Because my 1976 senior undergraduate year electrical engineering design project, teamed with 2 other classmates, was a remote car starter. We got “A”, but got critical feedback that we hadn’t fully comprehended security, as for our communications, we used off the shelf walkie talkies with coded audio tones. Things have come a long way since then. And no…dang…we didn’t patent the concept.
That's the thing, I can remote start/shut off, lock and unlock, and beep & flash lights as well as see the status of various things on the car with the Jaguar remote app now that I have the service turned on.
